NEW YORK (Am—Buying interest was slight and the

day as trading leased. Volume fell to 4,610,000 shares from the 5,060,000 in Friday’s rising market. It was a dull session. Some blue chips merely moved back

some of the higher~priced. vol- atile issues.

The list was steady to a bit higher in the morning but this upward edged withered as buvy ing power dried up. Stocks set- tled lower in the afternoon and closed at about their worst prices.

The Jones industrial average sank 4.92 to 821.31.

A big factor was a 5-point de< cline by du Pont. The stock ad’ vanced 5 points Friday. AVERAGE FAILS The Associated Press average of 00 stocks fell 1.3 to 305.9.

A preponderance of fractional gains gave the rails their plus . in the average. Santa Fe, how- I ever. yielded a point of its ‘4- 5 point rise Friday. New York 4 Central. Southern Railway and Southern Pacific were among ’ small gainers.

Texas Gulf Sulphur again was the most‘activs stock. It erasedl an early gain at more an 2‘ and settled for a net loss of 1 at 57% on 417.000 shares.
