Wheelchair Accessibility: The Freedom of Choice

I had always thought that P.E.I. had half decent accessibility for those in wheelchairs, as most buildings these days have ramps and it is rare to find a multi-story building without an elevator. But some information which had been sent my way made me change my attitude toward all the efforts of increasing accessi- bility. It is true that there are programs currently in place help the situation, but the present transportation service finishes for the night at 10:30, which can cause a lot of major headaches in many areas. One of the major problems that occur is the lack of safety from either late night chair malfunctions, the chance of drunken drivers, or relying on traffic lanes in the winter due to snow- filled sidewalks. This not only affects a person's safety, but also limits their employment possibilities and social activities. Also, with such a significant reliance on the tourism industry on Prince Edward Island, the ability of promoting a 24-hour service for those in wheelchairs surely would open up more of a market for people to visit our Island.

Please don’t blame the music department for being anti-social, it’s all just a result of our upbringings. The truth behind our cultish behaviour is that a course in snobbery is mandatory for all first year music majors.

In any case, it’s lucky for Ryan that he didn’t hit that light switch. It’s our secret switch. Those intruders who ignore the rule of the light switch will find them- selves falling through a trap door that feeds our experiments in voodoo. That’s right, voodoo. That casket in the hall is actually our storage cupboard for shrunk- en heads.
