How Horses Rest.

Horses can rest standing, provided the position be reasonably easy, but not fully ve-t exespt recumbent. It is | koown of some horses that they sever! lie down in the stall, though if kept ia} pisture they take their re-t hibitually in a recumbent position. It is well to consider whenever the habit has not been forcod upon the horse by some circumstance connected with the stell he was made to oceupy, in that he had| a muddy earth floor, or one made of|

Let us make flannel shirts for the Hottentots, interest ourselves io mighty charities, or become, in a word, models of public spirit. But let us not forget our homes. Io our homes are lips that often and often will yearn for cups of cold water, and sad, weary hearts will gladdeo and grow fresh again when the cup is given unmasked by a thoughtful hand. The small offerings cast so little; there is nothing in the world that coats so little and is yet so priceless. The fire burning brightly upon the hearth, the favorite dish upon the table, the cold water to the humble laborer when evening calls him home, aud the baby iifted from the mother’s tired arms, a strong hand at the heavy kéttle, ap appreciative word for the capital bread and the nice tea—this is the cup returned full and overflowing that half bavishes the caresof the day and brings new light into loving eyes. The old-fashioned songs played and sung for the silver-haired father, the ready fiogers that thread the needle for grandma's fading eyes, the word of tender cheer for the grieved child, these are such little cops, and yet they are so pleasant!— Fz.

Small Balls.

The last great truth that has dawned on the military world is that a ball through a man, something less than one-third of an inch in diameter, im- pairs his usefulness jast as much as one two-fifths or even say nine-twentie- ths of an inch in diameter. This being the case it is much more advantageous to make the smalier ball, as the soldier can carry & proportionately larger num- ber of bullets, and killor disable pro- portionately more men. So now there ig a glorious competiticn going on among the nations of the earth as to which shall have the most deadly small bore rifle. The Germans are at present somewhat behind in the race, but they are making landable efforts to catch up andit then ext great war can be delayed for six months or a year they will prob- ably find themselves in good shape for it, in this as in other respecte.
