Reddy didn't try to explain. He knew Mrs. Reddy knew Just what he meant. Meanwhile, the smart one continued to be smart. He knew that he was smart, and was proud of his smartness. Smart folk sometimes get that way. It got so that he thought he was quite as smart as his father and mother, and I suspect sometimes he thought he was smarter than they. Children do get that way.

"I don't see why father and mo- ther have to watch us all the time," said he to his brothers and sisters. "1 for one can take care of myself. I don't like being watched as if I were still a baby. Nobody's going to catch me."

So, because he felt so smart, this little Fox began to wander farther and farther away from home. Because nothing happened the first day he went a little far- ther the second day. Because no- thing happened the second day he went a little farther the third day. Reddy Fox noticed this, but said nothing. He let the little Fox go a little farther the following day, but he stopped him the next day. "You have hunted as far as it is safe for you to hunt," said Red-

dy.

"There's no danger. I'm not al- raid," replied little Mr. Too-Smart.

"That is just the trouble; you should be afraid," said Reddy.

"I don't see why I should be af- raid when there is nothing to be afraid of," declared little Mr. Too- Smart. He was just a little saucy in the way he said it.
