Benefit to be Held for Afghan Refugees

Benefits and concerts go together like ketchup and potatoes. Using a musical event to promote awareness of a political cause is the perfect chance to provide some educa- tional substance disguised as a con- cert. On Groundhog Day, February 2nd, Get Grounded!, a benefit concert for Afghan refugees will be held. Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the Red Cross Afghan Refugee Relief Fund.

After seeing the destruction,

poverty, and hunger in Afghanistan on the news, concert-organizer Sobia Ali was moved to take action. After dis- cussing the idea of a benefit with some of her friends: in November, Sobia decided to organize a concert with the help of other students that share her concerns. Thanks to the help of Jen Gallaghan, Erin Fagan, Melissa Mokle, George Marshall and Stuart Neatby, the event will finally take place.

Stuart Neatby was inspired to lend Sobia a helping hand because of the enormous numbers of people forced to live in refugee camps. “I think the devastating situation for the refugees of Afghanistan is something that absolutely cannot be ignored,” says Neatby.

“Oxfam has stated that there are still over 900,000 internally dis-

placed people within the country now. Tens of thousands of people are still living in refugee camps. The need [to help] is still there, and it’s going to be there for years to come,” says Neatby.

Sobia Ali says information will be available at the concert to show people what is going on in Afghanistan, “So people can see what their money is going toward.”

While the Red Cross provides information, a diverse assortment of musicians will provide entertainment. Halifax based Méshuntlers will make their first appearance on Prince Edward Island with their bizarre sub- pop trash-rock. Apparently all of their songs are sung in fake British accents. Local songwriter Briik Miller will be joined by Mike Page for some original folksy blues music. Hardcore Island activist-rockers, Tastes Like Burning will play a set of their emotionally devastating noise explosions. Also on the bill are some more traditional bar bands. Expect some alternative rock from Split Lip, top 40 radio rock from Maximum 90, and classic rock covers from Dr. Winston Bookertable.

Tickets for this wet/dry event are $6 and can be purchased at the door, in advance at the UPEI Student Union office, or look for them at a stand in the Breezeway around the end of January.
