A little incident which we lately witnes- sed in a crowded thoroughfare in Bagdad may here be worth introducting. An awk- ward groom had thumbled off the back of a playful filly, and left her free to career hither and thither. Among the spectators there was nobody who blamed the filly. A red bearded Persian, whose book-stall was kicked into the Tigris, has the sense to eurse the biped and not the quadruped. When she was caught, and the end of her halter rope was put into the groom’s hand by a by-stander, the man merely jumped on her back and rode quietly away.

RESTORING SOIL FERTILITY, The problem which confronts many farmers is how to increase the productive capacity of their farms. This question is made difficult by the fact that the farm, while being improved, must provide a liv- iving for the man who owns it, together with pay for the labor employed in work- ing it. Heretofore it has been these neces- sities that have obliged farmers to grow and sel] tie more exhaustive crops because they sold for the most money. There has been close competition by farmers who were cropping and exhausting virgin soil. That now has ended. The farmer in the vreat west is under the same neceasity of restoring fertility to bis partly exhausted land as is the farmer in the east. In this contest the victors will be the farmers who secure the best stock and are thus able to turn all the products of their farm into the manure pile with the greatest profit. The most serious losses of farmers come from keeping stock that does not pay its way, but now merely paying its way is not enough. The greater the returns from food given to stock the more cheaply the farm can be fertilized. The farmer who has set out to make his farm richer should not sell anything from it except as it is the product of some stock to which it has been fed.
A second point and hardly less import- ant isto grow as largely as possible of renovating crops, like clover and other leguinous plants which procure nitrogen from the air. Ifthe supply of nitrogen- ous fertility can be thus maintained, the farmer can well afford to purchase sup- plies of potash and phosphate that are needed.
Some portion of the farm should every year be devoted to growing corn, which, either cured dry or put into the silo, is the cheapest food that can be grown. The corn crop is the only one that we know that will every year make enough man- ure, if fed to stock, to failry top dress the land on which it is grown. Corn is not a complete ration, and it is exhaustive, while Clover is renovating. But the land that Will in three cuttings give four to five tons of clover hay will produce 30 tons Of green fodder corn if planted in drills wide enough apart to allow cultivat- ing And to give chance for the corn to ear. Such green corn as this is the feeding equiyalent of eight tons of clover hay, or about twice as much food as the same land would produce in clover hay. _ It is, however,much move than such land would produce in any kind of grass. The farm- er who is aiming mainly to increase the fertility of his land will seed largely with clover and will keep that as long on the ground as is necessary to get the most benefit from it.
Wiyyipec, Sept. 17.—The C. P. R. land department are engaged on plans for the irrigation of the Company’s lands in those districts of Assiboina and Alberta lying along the main line. This portion of the territories would greatly inproved in fer- tility and rendered more attractive to the eye of the traveller if relieved by growing trees of grass ofemerald hue. The subject is receiving close attention, and although little will be done this year, it is expected that in the early spring work on the im- provements will be started.
