In 1772-3 when Great Britain was negotirting a peace with the revolting American Colonies, she was re- presented by a Mr. Oswald, who appears to bave been very generous. He agreed un- necessarily to give up all of what is now Ontario, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, [llivois and Wisconsin. He was a most generous

man and would have given up the whole of if he had been asked. In later negotiations through the efforts of another gentleman

named Strachey, arrangements were made to keep Ontario, but the British were bluffed out ofa territory which now con- tains more people than the territory which pow contains more people then the terri- tory that was kept.
