Dear Fellow Students;

So, how goes the battle troops? Don’t get discour- aged - there’s only (depending when you read this) about 57 days to Christmas!!!

We're as busy as little beavers down here at the barn! We're working on a few things, including our lobby- ing efforts directed towards obtaining safe passage on University Avenue and toward trying to keep the Canada Employment Center on campus open. Cur- rently, we have two petitions circulating - one to send to city council regarding the safe passage issue and one to send to Mr. Valcourt regarding the Canada Employment Centers. In addition, we continue our ‘Enough is Enough”’ campaign to protest the govern- _ mentcuts in funding post secondary education. If you area student, this directly affects you because if _ government stops transfer payments to universities, _ our tuition wil skyrocket!

To find out what you can do to help, contact anyone of your student councillors or drop down to the barn and check it out. If we are to be successful in these issues we all have to work together so please get invloved!!!

Day Care Centre

Would you like to know what goes on in the basement of Marian Hall? Probably not, if you’ve seen what goes on in the rest of it, but the basement is different. It’s the home of the U.P.E.I. Day Care Centre. Along with director Holly Smith, five full-time staff pres- ently take care of 32 pre-school children. Children of students are usually given priority over those of faculty, staffand the general public, provided there’s a space available in the appropriate age group.

Each day is scheduled to include art activities, play, rest periods, stories, snacks, colouring and some classroom time for the older children. Every week, time is set aside for movies, music, use of U.P.E.I.’s gym, skating in the winter and field trips in the sum- mer. It’s alot more fun than going to university, and with no mid-terms either.

The Day Care Centre is funded by a grant from the Government, and by parents whose children attend. Since beginning work there, Holly has tried to gain for her staff the benefits other university workers automatically recieve, such as Medicare anda pension plan.

Also, Holly believes the centre would benefit enor- mously from larger premises, and although she is grateful to the university for providing the present site rent-free, and with no charge for heat and light, Marian Hall is perhaps not the best place for it.

Remnants of the night before’s house party are often not the best thing to be seen by four year old eyes at 8 a.m.; neither does Holly feel that it’s fair to the guys watching T.V. at 1 p.m. to keep quiet and observe naptime below.

In order to bring about these improvements in the service, a U.P.E.I. Day Care Committee has been formed. Please help us to help you by reading about its aims and completing the accompanying question- naire,
