For months a feverish activity has icned in the studios of the principal ‘h architects. The chance of cting the construction of a huge ex- sition does not occur every day, an ex- position, moreover, that is to surpass those of 1855, which left the Palais de l' Industrie; of 1878, which is marked by Trocadero, and of 1889, of which the Eiffel tewer forms the monument. The esults of that activity have been recent- : displayed in the Palais de l'Industrie. There an exhibition has been held of something like 750 designs, submitted by the 108 individuals who adhered to their declared intention of competing.

Most of the competitors have retained the Eiffel tower in their designs, seeing t>=t the cost of its removal and the in- demnity to the company which owns it would amount to about $3,000,000. Many others have, however, arranged for its tearing down in their plana

In M. Henard’s project all the existing constructions are swept away. Hesug- vests the razing of the Palais de l’Indus- trie and prolongs the Boulevard des In- valides to the Avenue des Champs Ely- Upon each side of this new ave- nue are to be constructed two palaces— one upon the side of the Avenue d’Antin, to be a Palais des Beaux Arts, and in- ten led to serve as a locale in which can

» held the annual exhibitions of paint- ings, after the closing of the exposition, and the other to be devoted to the use of the sciences and belles-lettres. Upon a triumphal bridge, which crosses the Seine, M. Henard has placed a symbolic statue of LaFrance. The Palace of Elec- tricity is installed upon the Esplanade des Invalides, and a floating exposition is to be moored before the Quai d’Orsay. One of the features of this project is the establishment of a movable platform from the Esplanade to the Champ de Mars along the river bank, which travels at a speed that will permit would be passengers stepping on to it while in motion. M. Henard changes the Champ de Mars by demolishing the dome and other parts, and by modifying the aspect of the Galerie des Machines with a cupola in the centre, 100 meters in di ameter. The Eiffel tower he alters zlmost beyond recognition by the add- ing of an immense belfry upon the third Not far from the tower is to be i Palace of illusions, composed of a vast hexagonal-shaped hall with mirror-lined valls, which will multiply the effects of illumination. Around this building M. Six Billion Damask Buds Gathered Every Year to Make It.

Sinee the emancipation of the Balkan Provinces the manufacture of attar of roses has become a great industry in Bulgaria, and has been taken up ona large scale in Germany. We have all been accustomed to connect the fabrica- tion of attar of roses with Persia and Syria, and even now India and Constan- tinople furnish probably the largest markets for it; but, although the art of making it-was discovered in Persia, the manufacture has now nearly or quite died out, and the centre of the business is now the country about Kazanlik, on the south slope or the Balkans, close to the Shipka, or Wild Rose Pass, famous in the history of the Russo-Turkish War. The rose-growing belt is situated at an average altitude of 1,000 feet above the sea, and extends to a length of about seventy miles, with an average breadth of ten miles. On this ground are pro- duced annually from 5,000,000,000 to 6,000, 000,000 rose blossoms.

The number of varieties cultivated is very small. Ninety per cent. of all the blossoms are taken froma bushy vari- ety of the Rosa Damascena, or damask rose, known to our gardners mainly as the ancestor from which the infinite variety of hybrid perpetual roses derive a large part of their blood. Of the re- maining ten per cent. a part are gather- ed from the white musk rose, which is frequently planted as a hedge around the fields of pink Damascena, while the rest are furnished by a dark red variety of Damascena. Other sorts of roses have been tried, but some yield no attar at all, and others give an essence having the perfume of violets,’ or pineapples, or hyacinth, rather than of roses.

Expensive Bibles.

The three most valuable Bibles in the world are to be found at the British Museum, the National Library in Paris, and the cloister of Belemia,near Lisbon, The first isin manuscript, written by Alcuin and his pupils, and in the year 800 was presented to Charlemagne on the occasion of his coronation. The Paris Bible was purchased in 1527 and dedi- cated to Leo X. by Cardinal Ximenez. One of the three copies, printed on yvel- lum paper, was sold to England in 1789 for 12,000 francs. The Belemia Bibleis in nine folio volumes and is written on parchment. Lous XVIIL made the Por- tuguese Government a present of the volumes.

A Good Duelling Method,

A good method of meeting a dueiling challenge was one which was employed on acertain occasion by a French states- man against an illiterate bully. The statesman received from him, for no reason whatever, a challenge to fight a duel. Thewriter was a densely ignor- ant man, and nearly every word in the challenge was misspelled. The statesman responded with the following letter: ‘‘Dear Sir—You have called me out without any good reason. I have, therefore, the choice of weapons: I choose the spelling-book. And you are a dead man.” The duel was never fought. A Clansman Dead,

Norman Macleod, chief of the Clan Macleod and, indeed, one of the last great Highland chieftains, is dead at Paris. Toroyto, March 4—The number of cudden deaths due to heart disease is ap- paling. The medical profession is devoting more attention to the heart and its ail- ments at the present time than ever before, and many physicians are making a specialty of diseases of this organ.
