made in espousing the cause of the south in the American civil war. The southern armies fought with admirable skill and valor. The south fought hard for absolute independence against the supremacy ot the more powerlul north. Soare the Boers now fighting hard against British supremacy. But

the gallant fight of the svuth was ina bad cause, and the successful assertion of southern independence would have meant the triumph of slavery, and the victory of principles inherently evil and absolutely opposed to all human pro- gress. In like manner, the Boers is fighting for an independence which he has abused, aud struggling for a _ free- dom to carry on a native policy that is worse than the slavery once practised in the southern States af America. The cause of the Boer is inherently unholy and unjust, andis fundament- ally opposed to alltrue progress and civilization.”

Distant colonies have come to know one another, and to feel an interest in each other’s concerns, their economic advancement, and their mutual happiness and security, as parts of the same Empire. each part has become a matter of con- cern to other parts. All this happens because the colonies are free; it could not have happened before the great colonies secured legislative autonomy;

any other power, because they have not legislative autonomy and are not ani- mated by the spirit of liberty. Recent events in South Africa will form a mile- stone in the career of colonial progress. A great work of pacification in South Africa lies before the British Govern- ment. There are irreconcilables among the Boers now as before, but it isto be hoped thatthe mass of the Boers can be made accessible to reason. British justice ought to do this, and of British justice they will be assured. At the same time, the services of the loyalists will deserve distinct recogni- tion, in some form; the lessons learnt in the past willensurethis. All will be well when it ends well.—Monetary Times.

The capture of Pretoria by the Bri- tish, without any attempt on the part of the Boers to defend it from the forts they had built and equipped at such immense cost, will amaze the military writers friendly to the Boers who were let into the secret of these defences. An American writer, who had gone over the forts, said that Pretoria had been prevared to resist a siege of any number of men for three years. Each of the forts which crown the hills sur- rounding the town had, according to this writer, four heavy cannon, four French guns of fifteen miles range and thirty heavy Gatling guns, besides fifty light gatling gunsfor the defence, of the minor positions among the hills.’ Three large warehouses were filled with ammunition and there were large cold storage warehouses, with a capacity for thousands of oxen each. The Boers have, apparently, preferred to disman- tle these forts and defend strong natur- al positions among the mountain dis- tricts of the north-east, if forced to do so.

Another road that is in a shocking state is the one leading from Cherry Valley to Pownal wharf. The people have also been waiting for eight years for the grits to make this road passable Ifthey re- pent, we trust they will shed a few tears aod afew dollars right along this high- way.

Then there is the road leading to China Point wharf, a first cousin to the above. In one place the tide has washed away the breakwater and the roadway; and those who wished to get to the wharf with & cart must ruc one whee! in the ditch avd the other along on the fence, We would not kick if the fence was gvo.; but it is not. Our modest request of the government is: It you can’t fix the road will you please fix the fence.

Judson’s bridge bas been “fixed” again. The first time it -was “fixed” with two epruce boughs, This time by three boards and four pieces of rotten lumber. It is an artistic job.

Mr. David P. Irving, of Vernon River Bridge, has planted one thousand apzle trees this season. Mr. Irving has grest faith in the fruit growing industry im tis province, and sgain proves he has the courage of his convictions.

We notice in the Public Works report for 1899 this item: ‘‘Gallas Point Road, $17.50.” Now, as there is no place in thie Province bearing that pawe, and as there was not seventeen and balf cents spent on our roads last year, we conclude that the government must beve spent this money for some other p rpose,—perbaps for cork screws for Pinean’s Paris expedition
