MR. VICTOR BEATON

..tR.esidants of East Point and vicinity were to learn on Decem- ber 18, of the sudden passing of Mr. Victor Beaton.

Takm suddenly ill at his home, he was rushed to the Charlotte town Hospital. but the best. in medical skill and kind nursing proved unavailing and he passed away. fortified by the last. rites of the Church. adminiisterod by Rt. Rev. Maurice MacDonald. His for- mer Pastor. Rcv. R. J. MacDonald was also at his bedside.

Mr. Bcation was a man of sterl- ing character, highly respected by all who knew him. As a young man he attended the Nova Sootia Agricultural College, the-re obtaining a solid grounding in the science of agriculture. which. to- gether with high intelligence. tliorcrug-hneu and industry brought outstanding success in the opera- tion of his large farm property. Several years ago his health be- gun to fail. and he sold his hold- inga. retaining the home site and g-ardons. where he devoted him- self to his beloved hobby of growing flovwara. A great. lover of flowers, his beautiful gardens were viewed with delight by all who passed by. It. was indeed a treat. to visit. there. and Mr. Beston was never too bury to dtow one around. or share his great Blow- lodge of horticulture and gve expert advice to those interested. Many beautiful blooms went from his gardens to adorn the Church. and to brighteri the rooms the sick. at home or in hospital.

Mr. Boston was the only survi- ving non of the late Mr. and Mrs. James J. Beaton of East Point. He leaves to mourn two sisters. Margaret. Mrs. John Gillis. East Point, and Loretta. Mrs. John A. MacDonald. North Lake.

His funeral to St. Coiumba Church. on December 16th, was largely attended. Services at Church and gnve were conducted by his pastor. Rev. W. D. Mac- Donald. Pailbsucrs were Messrs. Fred Chaverle, John Gillis, P. R. Benton. Stanley Cameron, Charles B. MacDonald and W. S. Macin-

Mr. Elmer Livingstone. sitcom- panied by hia brother Archibald. were week-end visitors to their home in Upton. The Livingstone ibrothers operate a mill in Fortune Head.

The many friends of James Banks of Poplar Point. are glad to see him about again after being laid up with pneumonia and pleur- isy for the last few weeks.

The last. silver thaw has done considerable damage to ornamen- tal trees, etc.. in this vicinity. The telephone lines leading from Ann- andale. Dundas. Bridgetown and Cardigan were snapped off in sev- eral places due to the weight of ice. Telephone communication was at a. standstill for quite some t me.

Mr. and Mrs. Patti Kingsbury of Dundas. accompanied by some friends. motored to Murray River last week. There being good roads and ideal weather they enjoyed a show in the new theatre. Much credit. is due the proprietor of this beautiful movie house. called the Mayfair. All wish him the best of luck.

WASHINGTON (AP)-Sir David Kelly, British ambassador to Mos- cow from 1949 to 1951. Monday named agriculture as "the Achilles Heel" of Russia.

The many tributes paid to the memory of I-Isrman P. Smith, who died in a tragic car-accident on Oct. 1. 1058 prove the esteem in which he was held.

A son of. Michael smith and Catherine McQuaid of St. Teresa's Herman inherited their ardent faith and kindness of heart. He was a friend in the true sense of the word. His neighbors in Cardigan speak of him as "a man who was never too busy to come to the help of his fellow man." Herman's ready smile attested the sincerity of his friendship and his genial personal- ity made him welcome everywhere.

marrled five years ago. he took up residence in Cardigan.

The shock of his sudden death at the early age of 3'1 cast. sad- ness over the whole community, and the heartfelt sympathy of all went out to his bereaved young wife (Irene Hogan) and their three year old son, Jimmie.

Also mourning the loss of a most. devoted son and brother are his aged parents, three sisters, Sister St. Joseph of the saviour, Stella Maris Convent. North Rustico: Mrs.
