A girls‘ softball league will functto again in Charlottetown this season. it became apparent last night at an organization meeting in the Knights of Col- umbus hall Representatives of three teams were on hand and the first practice session will be held Monday evening at 0.30 at the K. of C. diamond.

An invitation was extended to all girls wishing to play. either as individuals or teams. to attend the practice.

The two nurses‘ teams which played in the league last year were not represented last night. It was considered possible that because daylight time is not in operation this year they might not be ablc to get off duty in time to play.

INDIANAPOLIS. May OO-JAP) -'I‘ragedy rode the bricks of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to- day with the death of a veteran driver as Marui Rose. Chicago. wriumphed over a teammate by seconds in winning the 31st re- newal of the 500-mlle automobile classic.

Rose, 41. was co-winner of the 1941 race with Floyd Davis.

The. driver who met death was an Indianapolis man, William (Shorty) Cantlon. who had been racing for many years.

The triumphant winner dram- atically snatched the lead from Bill Holland of Bridgeport. Conn. with less than 17 miles to go. Holland led for 258 miles until Rose overhauled him on the south turn on the 4B3rd mile and streaked on to victory.

The spectacular duel between Rose and Bill Holland his team- mate was witnessed by a crowd in excess of 125,000.

Rose, who made only one pit stop of a minute and 40 seconds for a tire change. covered the perilous 500 miles in 4:17.521’! to average 116.338 miles an hour. This was the second fastest race in Speedway history. being eclip- sed only in 1938 when the late Floyd Roberts averaged 117.2 miles an hour.

Rose finished exactly 32 seconds ahead of Holland. with Ted Horn of Paterson, N.J.. trailing in third place. 2% minutes behind the winner. Cliff Bergere, 50-year-old Toledo. 0., veteran. was fourth.
