After graduation from Pine Hill} Divinity Hall in Halifax, he was minister of St. Andrew’s Presby- terian Church, Saint John, from 1923: to 1929. Doctor Bonnenll next served six years as minister of Winnipeg’s Westminster United Church. His New York duties are the second longest pastorate in the Church's history.

Among his several visits to Europe while studying the social and religious situations, Doctor Bonnell in 1949, was awarded by King George VI, “The King’s Medal for Service in the Cause of Freedom”’.
