CFS rep. sought

The Student Union is looking for nominations for the position of Canadian Federation of Students National Com- mittee representative for P.E.I.

The rep should expect a heavy load of duties, with two national conferences and two executive meetings (all outside the province) in the next year.

Also, the SU wants to orient the new rep in the ways of CFS before the first conference, to be held in November.

CFS’s constitution technically calls for a provincial election for such a position, but as UPEI is the only full member in the province, and as President Michelle Dorsey calls dealing with prospective member Holland College “like trying to beat them with a stick to get them to do anything,” Council has called for nominations from the general student body, and will ratify a decision at its next" meeting on September 23. ‘

Fall elections coming

The Student Union Council has opened nominations for seven (7) positions on Council. The positions are: cOne Arts respresentative ‘ One Science representative ‘ One Education representative ° Two student Senators

° One Board of Governors representative ° Ombudsman

Nominations close on September 24, and elections will take place on October 2 and 3.

President Michelle Dorsey proposed the extended elections because of poor turnouts for past fall polls. She hopes that students who are not on campus, or in the Robertson Library polling station, every day of the week will take advantage of the Tuesday/ Wednesday split.

No residence rep.

The Student Union Council has vetoed a suggestion by VP External Les Smith to create the position of residence represen- tative on Council.

Instead, regular councillors will act as liaisons to all three residences and try to improve representation both to and from the students concerned.

Council made the decision at its Sunday night meeting because students living on campus are already represented by their Faculty reps, and because the creation of residence reps would contradict efforts made in last year’s constitution to reduce double representation by eliminating class represen— tatives.

Cards for discounts

Now available at the Student Union office in the Barn, Canadian Federation of Students-Studentsaver membership cards. These cards, for which all full-time students have paid in their student fees, bring a discount at several Island businesses, and can be picked up during business hours.

International Student Identity Cards (ISIC) are available at no cost to students bringing in a black and white passport type photo.

Shape up at U.P.E.l.

Free fitness classes will be held in the Gym beginning Wednesday, September l2.

Everyone is welcome to the classes. which will be given each Monday, Wednesday. and Friday from ll:30 to 12:30 and from 12:30 to 1:30.

Newspaper people keep promises.

Orientation success

- Orientation co-chair Heather MacNevin reported to the SU Council on Sunday night that this year’s Orientation was a success, with most events well attended.

MacNevin, said over 300 freshman registered for the three days of events last week, with Gordi MacFadyen being awarded a prize as the most outgoing frosh.

Shinerama chair Marjorie Torrens also spoke at the meeting, calling the Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser a “success... except for the rain.”

Between eighty and a hundred participants raised over $3200 for research into the disease, including one group of ten who brought back $400 from Montague alone. A group was also sent to Summerside, as well as the remainder who worked Charlottetown locations.

Last year, according to Torrens, better weather saw 120 shiners raising $4100. '

Seniors

Meeting of the Senior class at 6:30 p.m. on Monday the 17th in the Barn. Details of fundraising for Senior Week will be discussed after an executive has been elected.

Freshmen

The freshman class is also having its first class meeting on Monday, September 17. but 15 7:30 p.m. It woo will be held on the second floor of the Barn, and an executive will be elected.

Biology

Father Charlie of the Biology department urgently needs the help of you angels.

He needs about one thousand large coffee jargs (one litre size) for water sample. '

Economics

The UPEI Economics Society meeting will occur at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 15 in the Barn’s Panther Lounge.

This is your chance to attend its first meeting of the academic year. The Club will discuss its strategy for the year. . Topics will include...the possibility of ordering shirts and beer mugs; the Economics lounge; the future of the Invisible Hand; a Social Action Committee (i.e. parties), fund raising, and the possibility of providing at least the first round of liquid refreshments at the meetings.

Engineers

The lingineers have issued a challenge to all societies and clubs to participate in the Terry Fox Run on September 23. They believe their faculty can raise the most money for cancer research. V

The Social Committee meets on Tuesday the 18th at 6:30
