Like General Grant, he dida’t wait for the opportunity, he pushed the battle tu the gates, and was soon inside.”

The students were advised to have singleness Of purpose, to find out the business or profession for which they were best suited, and to apply all their power to the development of their adopt- ed line of life. In the speaker’s opinion, aman whose evergies are concentracted upon one thing at 4 time, can surmount almost any difficulties which lie in his path. He knows of no such thing as failure} his indomitable perseverance is bound to gain for him his object.

He admonisbes his hearers to be carefal in making choice of a calling, “and let it not be determined,” he said, “by some passing whim, or the incon- siderate advice of well-meaniug re- latives. Let the experience of others guide you to a certain extent, but let your own judgment decide.”’

The young man going ia business must know the best goods for his market, and must know how to place them before the customers to obtain their orders. Attention to details was another important matter. The men who attend to the details of their work are among those who succeed in life. Be mindfal of the little odds and ends. Pertect accuracy and completeness of detail are standards which should be aimed at in every department of life.

The business man, the politician—ia fact every man needs self reliance There are many men who continually look for favors ; they depend upon their influen- tial friends for assistance, being afraid to fight their own battles, Give me the man who depends upon his own re- sources.

You must have the courage to buy, and also the courage to decide what, where, and when to buy. Have the courage to stick to your trade or call- ing, although at times circumstaneées may be against you. Almost every man has bad his failures, but he makes these failures the stepping stone to victory. Pluck requires decision.

The stability of our commerce rests upon the principle, the honor, and the integrity of our business men. Those who have these attributes are apt to get on in the world. Let your riches be earned by means of honest profits aod honest industry, and yours will be that sweet satisfaction which is the re- ward of the upright and the honorable.

Your tempers—how are you? Do you become impatient under trial, fretful when childed or crossed angry ,revenge- ful when injured, vain whea flattered, proud when prospered, complaining when seemingly forsaken, unkind when neglected? Are you subject to discon- tent, to ambitioa, to selfishness? Are you worldly, covetous of riches, of vain pomp and porade, of indulgence, of honour orease? Are you unfeeling, contemptous of others, seeking your own, boasters, proud, levers of your own selves? Beware! These are the sedments of old nature. Nay,if they exist in you, in however small a degree, they are demonstrative that the old man of sin is not dead. It will be asad mis- take if you detect these evils within, and yet close your eyes to them, and continue to make professions of holiness. These are uot infirmities; they are in- dications of want of grace.— Bishop Foster.
