Phone Employees Vote

In Favour Of Walkout Unless Demands Granted

Mr. Arthur I-lolland, president at local union 1811 of the Inter- national Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in an interview last night stated that.a strike vote had been taken on October 3rd among the members of the union to determine the wishes of the employees of the Island Tele- phone Company in the wage and hour dispute between the com- pany end the union. The result of the vote was that unless the demands of the union were met by the Telephone Company the employees will refrain from work on a date to be announced later.

Mn Holland said last night that he was not in a position to give further details regarding arrange- ment now being finalized nor was he able to state on what date the walkout will take place in the event of last minute nego- tiations failing.

Permission to take a strike vote was granted the brotherhood at a special meeting of the Pro- vincial Cabinet held on Monday. September 21st, the ,terms and time of the vote to be fixed by the Provincial Secretary.

RUNNYMEDE, England. (CPI- The Queen stood with bowed head on a mist-shrouded hill beside the Thames Saturday and unveiled a shrine to 20,455 Commonwealth airmen and women who live in nameless graves.

Some 27.000 relatives and friends of those whose names are ohiselled on the white stone of the shrine stood with bated heads in drizziing min as the Queen spoke the words of dedication.

She spoke of the "glorious com- pany" of fallen airmen and said "they were part of a glorious and far larger company who laid down their lives for freedom.”

"It is fitting that those who rest in nameless graves should be re- membered in this place for it was in these fields of Runnymede seven centuries ago that our forefathers first planted the seed of liberty which helped spread acrosaiohe earth the conviction that man should be free and not enslaved."

It was at Runnymede 740 years ago that King John was forced to sign the Magna 0arta., the first major declaration of British liber- ties.

The names on the stone inside the white-towered memorial in- clude those of 3.072 Oanadians and 26 Newfoundlanders. -

Among the 2,000 men and women who came from overseas for the unveiling were many Canadians.
