SUGAR MAPLE

(Acer saccharum)

Buds opposite, 1 cm or less long. pointed. brown, covered with several pairs of scales, faintly hairy.

Twigs smooth. shiny. brown with yellow or white lenticels, hairless.

Fruit about 3 cm long, plump seed. slender stalk usually longer than fruit, seed wings almost parallel.

Young bark grey, smooth. old bark dark grey or grey-brown, with long vertical irregular strips that curl outwards along one side or sometimes with thick scales.
