strange But True

To the many boys and girls who wrote me saying how much they enjoyed the chapter on "school Days", let me narrate a little incl- dent which took place "down on the farm” when I was a boy.

I had a white ox which I named Gabriel. And during the winter I broke it to the sled and made numerous journeys here and there.

Many's the moonlit night I took my best-liked girl friend beside me on the pint-sized sled, and Gabriel trotted up and down the road like the good ox he was.

And strange but true, grandpa smiled his approval A even boast- ed to our neighbors that I'd broke the ox to driving about like a horse.

But grandma said I'd committed a mortal sin by calling Gabriel after an angel and bad luck was sure to sit on our doorstep.

One day I was heading down the main highway in the direction of Onarlottetown when lo and be- hold I saw a funeral processio coming in the opposite direction. Was my face red!

I jumped off the sled, grabbed ,Gabriel's halter and coaxed and lpuifed and pulled till I was black in the face and giving off real pers- piration.

But Gabriel didn't care whether the dead got buried or not. Nor .would he give an inch. when I prodded him in the side with the ;toe of my boot he let out a bellow .as loud as a cannon. I By this time the first sleigh was lhalted and out jumped its two ioccupants and came to my assist- ancc.

"What do you mean by holding up a funeral?" they chorused. "Get back onto that sled. head first, and good going lad."

Without lurlher ado one of the men grabbed gave it a powerful twist. started things. First, the ox gave out another deafening roar, and then turning face about look a bee- line across the field to the barn, and at such a reckless speed I was actually afraid to turn my head to see the men whose laugh- ter reached me across the field.

Gabriel and I sped through our lnpple orchard and into the barn- yard when the animal went down with a mighty groan on a pond of ice.

When I saw grandpa coming to- wards me I felt a great weakness in my knees and started crying. "Quiet your blubbering." he said when he came to the spot where the ox lay and examined it. "The critter has a broken leg and we'll have to put him out of misery and into our beef barrel."

POTATO BOATS-The two po- tato boats, the Robcll and thc Pclyriver, which have been loading for some time at the Railway wharf, completed operations last night and will today be escorted outside the harbour by the CO5. Saurel, if that ship is available. The Government icebreaker is at standby at all hours to come to the aid of any vessel needing her help. Should plans materialize as outlined, the Saurcl will escort another waiting potato boat to the Railway wharf. There is a possib- ility thst still another potato boat will arrive here later, if weather conditions permit.

NEW GLASGOW SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CONCERT - The New Glasgow school concert was held in the hall on December 23. Mlrs. George Dlckleson acted as organist. An enjoyable program was carried out with Mr. Lorne Stevenson acting as chairman for the evening. Santa Claus later arrived and distributed gifts to the pupils and teacher. also a treat of apples. oranges and candy supplied by the Women's Institute. Eleven pupils. Avonns Msulusland.
