Time For Action

1n a letter in t0day’s issue, Mr. J. O. Hydn- man emphasizes the importance of prompt action on the part of the Provincial Government in pressing upon Ottztwa the necessity of provid- 111g. m the Supplementary Estimates this year, for a start to be made on the harbour improve- ment project for Charlottetown. The time, as Mr. Hyndman says, is short, as the Supplemen- tiaz Estimates are likely tolbe brought down s fortnight Hon. Mr. Dunning is fully informed as to the nature of the work; the survey has been completed, and there is no rea- so! i! the world why further time should be wasted in view of the serious unemployment situation. __In addition, Mr. Hynd-naa suggests immedi- iis stops being taken to make a complete sur- VQ of the proposed North River Bridge pm- ioet. Mr. McIntyre did not explain what the nature of Giis partial survey was, perhaps for the good and sufficient reason that he did not know, From all that we can learn, no real effort was made i0 implement Premier Campbellfll promise given in i935, either by the federal or provincial au- thorities. The borings necessary to make an ac- curate estimate of the cost of this project would take a considerable time. No such work was undertaken, yet last year the Provincial Gov- ernment obtained, frorn the Federal Department of Public Works, a statement calculated to throw cold water on the whole proposition.

It is possible that had there been more ‘active co-operation between the federal and provincial governments, "both these unem- ployment projects would now be under way. The failure to achieve this co-operation is all the more inexcusable by reason of the fact that the Dominion Finance Minister is himself a re- presentative for this constituency in Parliament.

Since the above was written, a special meeting of the City Council was held last night, at which both the North River bridge and the har- bour improvement projects were strongly in- dorsed, and special emphasis laid on the need of taking immediate action in both cases.
