Like most of the remainder of the worl, that remote little country has enjoyed this yeer an almost unprecedented wealth of sunlight and heat. The brief Icelandic summer can have a rare beauty of its own, and that of 1893 has been enchanting. Steady drought in June, rains in July, and warm dry weather again in August, brouglit on the hay to great advantage, and the latest batch of letters speak of the harvest as unusually promising. Almust every- where along the coasts the fisheries have been excellently successful. It is plain, therefore, that, for once, Iceland has had a chance from the weather, wiiich has of late years been its most cruel enemy,

If a succession of good seasons like the present had occurred a dozen years azo, Iceland might have been saved. But especially since the political agitations of 1835, which disturbed and discourag- ed the population, things have been going materially from bad to worse, We are occasionally called upon to listen to jeremiads about Iceland starvazion from those whose sentiment for the Ice- anders is more active than their infor- mation is exact, and the English public has become suspicious of cries of “Wolf!” But the present season, wit! its excellent weather and good supplies of food, has not shown any re-action against the draining away of the people. This summer no fewer than 600 persons emigrated tu America, bringing the population below that limit of 70,000 to which it had already dwindled. The island now contains, it is believed, few- er inhabitants than it did in 1870, before the temporary rise in Icelandic prosper- ity. The emigrants are largely of the farm-laborer class, and there is a grow- ing complaint that portions of the coun- try are going out of cultivation because there is no one to work on the land,

The great geyser has been very slug- gish this year, and itis believed that weather which is excelient for crops acts in a deplorable way upon this class of phenomena, It is by her extraordin- ary sights. and by the visitors drawn to see them, that Iceland must hope to live. —London Saturday Review.

2000 Wire Nails a Minute.

A rather unique wire nail machine has been erected recentiy in the Machin- ery Hall, It is really ten machines in one, says Iron Age. It is circular in form, the ten parts of the machine be- ing placed on a massive table, receiving motion from itscenter. Tie motion 1s imparted ina novel manner. A heavy shaft runs to the center, where it is connected by suitable gearing with a vertical plunger. On the sides of the plunger are wedges which operate the ten sections as the plunger moves up an4 down. A coil of wire is placed on a reel below the table in front of each section, and the finished nails run down metal troughs into boxes by the side of each reel, The whole ten sections can be operated at one time on nails of the

Peter the Great. Since then they have been buried with their husbands in St. Peterburg.

An Unstable Boundary Line,

“You have heard of smuggling, I pre- sume,” remarked a guest at one of the hotels the other day. ‘*Well,” he con- tinued, “I ran against the most stupen- dous scheme in that line last summer I ever heard of. You are doubtless aware that ordinary every day smugglers are content to transport their goods over the line from one country to another, the

object being, of course, to evade the payment of the customs duties, The people with whom I came in contact

were superior to such common methods, which might do for low pirates and out- lawed brigands, but not for a live, wide- awake Yankee, and especially a Canadian Yankee. They don’t move the ‘goods. They move the line.

“Up in the furthest easterly part of Maine there comes a place where Maine

stops and New Brunswick begins, That is the boundary line between the two

e\nwies. That is also where the Cana- dian Yankees spoken of have their homes. They are naturally given to farming, some of these people, and even if McKiuley did put a duty on grain, ponitry and other things, it didn’t make any difference witli some of the sturdy yeomen who live alongside the line. The putlication of the news of the pas- sage of the tariff bill didn’t cause them a moment’s uneasiness. They simply went on raising their Canadian wheat and their Cauadian oats. At the same time they kept their eyes on the boun- dary line—what tuey could see of it. The visible portion of this remarkable boundary consisted of upright iron posts, set at intervals of one mile through the land. Not being clinched on the other side of the earth, these posts are responsive to influences placed on them on the Canadian side, In other words, they can be takei: up and reset, “About the time these upright and honest farmers over the line have their crops in condition to harvest a peculiar thing happens. Some dark night, a half dozen of them go coon hunting, and when they return to their firesides they are on American soil, they and their grounds, and with them the corps, The boundary line has moved and is located a half mile or further toward the Arctic Ocean. ‘These guileless tillers of the soil then dispose of their products at United States prices, and some time dur- ing the winter, in some unknown man- ner, the boundary line takes a backward
