Often the offending tooth is holding one end of some bridgework in the mouth and the loss of the tooth would mean considerable expense to the patient. It often happens that a patient with low back pain will consult his physician and when asked about his teeth will tell the physician that ne has had an X ray of his teeth and that the dentist says that they are all right. or at least has not suggest- ed extracting any of them. From this information the physic- ian may then search elsewhere for the infection-tonsils, sinuses, gull bladder. large intestine, and fail to locate it.

In a large number of cases he will find that the ilaticnt is constipated and that absorption of wastes from the large bowcl is responsible for the backache.

The gall bladder is also often at fault, nnd in thin individuals the backache may be clue to a. dropping down of the organs of the abdomen. Chronic appendicitis causes some cases of backache.

Many cases are due to poor pos- tlll"c-poor position of the body sit- ting or standing.

However, most cases are due to infection and the commonest infec- tion is bnd teeth.

While tlle tonsils are often at fault. they should not be removed until all suspected teeth are first re- moved, as it is embarrassing to physician and distressing to patient to have the tonsils removed and the low back pain be just as bad several months afterwards.

Aftcr suspected teeth are removed the pzlill in the back may grow worse for a short time owing to the tom biooclvcrsels about tile teeth absorb- ing the poison direct, but this pain soon decreases and finally disappears in u few weeks or months.

Before Mr. Marconi left England the previous year the manager of the Time has arranged with him that the first transatlantic mes- sage by wireles telegraphy‘ from this side should be addressed t: "The Thundcier."

Mr. Marconi was sanguine that his experiments from North Am- erica. would be successful, but there ww much hard work to be done, and he could not indicate even ap~ proximately when he would get t!" desired results. A year or two be- fore, Mr . Marconi had obtained wireless communication between different points in the British Isles, and then he was successful in ef- fecting conumunication by the Mar- coni method between England and France. For his transatlantic experimezi; l“ had erected a wave-power sta- tion at Poldhu in the country cf Cornwall, England. Then he crossed the Atlantic to Newfoundland and began experimenting to ascertain if he could detect the waves emitted from Poidhu. His station on Signal Hill at St. John's was only a tem- porary one, and on that bleak coast, on the winter day of December 12, 1901, the young Italian got the first transatlantic signal from the air. It was shortly after noon on that memorable day when Mr. Marconi with two of his staff, detectedl the letter "s"—-t.hree dots on the Morse code-flashed from the spark out- fit set up on the little promontory on the southwest tip of England. This result created a great sensa- tion, and proved that transatlantic electric wave telegruphy was quite feasible and not inhibited by dis- tance or by the earth's curvature even over an arc of a.
