Lorne Wright, proprietor oi service station was first to e evidence in which he stat- ed .liat on the morning of Nov- eiiilier 26th. last he 'arrived at the service station about 8.30 and imedistely noticed several arti- cles in the office had been dis- arranged and that a rear window was smashed. Mr. Wright said the only items he noticed in be missing were several packages of Iigaretes and a few chocolate bars. He also discovered. he said. that the handle on the gas pump located in front of the building, was broken. He stated that he im- mediately called the Summerside R C. M. P. The witness told the court that he was the last to leave the pre- niises the previous night and that all doors had been secured from the inside with the,exceptlon of -the office door which was locked by a night latch. He said also that the windows were closed per- manently by nailing.

Cst. P. J. Borys. who investi- gated the break, said he found fingerprints on both the inside and outside of the broken window glass and stated he sent these fingerprints to the fingerprint and identification section of the R. The senior program consisted of a play from a literature les- son by grade 6. a current event contest with grades 0 and 10 com- peting. and an arithmetic table match competition between grades it and 7. Demonstration lessons in experimental science and in French were conducted by the grade 10 students.

The classrooms were attractive- ly decorated in keeping with Edu- cation Week. Miss Christine Mac- Leod is head of the senior de- partment. while Mr. Weston Car- mody is teacher of the primary grades.

The ladies of the Crapaud W.I. graciously provided generous treats to the students to com- plete a successful Education Week program. --S.

Death of Long River Resident

-The death of Mr. John Mur- ray Constable occurred on March 5 at his home at Long River fol- lowing a brief illness. He was a well known and highly respected retired farmer and was in his 77th year.

Active politically until recent years. when his health began to fail, he was a staunch Liberal.

Surviving are his wife. the former Annabelle MacLeod. and one son. Willard of Charlotte town.

The funeral was held from his late home on Tuesday when the officiating clergyman was the Rev. S. Haslarn of the United Church. and was largely attend- ed. -Bur. ing any money Arsenault said his Juvenile partner also took a few packages of cigaretes and some chocolate bars and they then left the building and proceeded to the gas tanks. He said they wanted to know what their chances of getting some gas was. as they had planned to "get" a car and go for a ride. and in dying to get gas from the locked pump. they broke off the handle. They then got on the bicycles and re- turned to Summerside. leaving the vehicles at the Capitol Theatre. from where they had taken them. A. enault said they hid the cigar- etes near Edward's home over night and retrieved them the next morning.

The accused did not give evid- ence nor did he call any witneses in his own behalf. He was then committed for trial at the next court on criminal jurisdiction for Prince County by Magistrate Hin- n.

In other cases on the docket. two youths from the Bedeque area charged with wilful damage to another person's property to the extent of 320.00. were order- ed to pay for the damages and court costs.

The case of a party from Al- berton charged with creating a disturbance was adjourned for one week. while aman from Summerside charged with operat- ing a motor vehicle while his ability was impaired. was fined 3100.00 and costs. -8

Kelvin Grove Resident Dies

-Mrs. John R. Stavert passed away in her 76th year in the Prince County Hospital after an illness of several weeks. She was a well known and highly esteem- ed resident of Kelvin Grove.

Cameron is the only woman ever to be elected to this office in the Province of British Columbia. since the inception of the Board nearly 50 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Cameron resided at Kensington in 1945 where he owned and operated the Cameo Theatre. Mr. Cameron is a native of Indian River and is a brother of Mrs. Leslie Ramsay and Mr. A. J. Cameron of that place. In 1946 they left this province for British Columbia where be open- ed an office as public accountant and two years later Mrs. Cameron opened up her own real estate of- fice. In the intervening years both have been most successful in their chosen occupations and their many friends in this province join in wishing them continued success.

Stresses Basic Principal ln Eoucational Cbiectives

The inipunauce of education in the life of a community was stressed by Hon. n.. .P.. Foley. speaking on the iiuuget debate in the House Thursday;

He pointed out that education does not consist only of keeping I boy or girl in school. college or university. "Education starts at tile mother's knee and ends at the grave." He told of an in- stance where a policeman who had very little education and who was sent to makesa report on a fatal accident. in his re- port. said Mr. Foley. he wrote; "I interviewed the running of the deceased today.",

On the other hand, said the member from Sumrnerside. if a person goes to school or college. it does not necessarily mean that he or she is educated. They will find that they still have a lot, to learn and in this respect they have to continue their education themselves. "To be a leader one must have ability and judgment.-q many people have the ability but lake the Judgment." he said.

Mr. Foley praised the work of the Women's Institutes. "Along with what they teach others. they are learning themselves." be said. "The 4-H Clubs are a splendid thing for the rural boys and girls of our Province. the lessons that they learn in conducting their own affairs cannot be overesti- mated."

FISHERIES

Spesking of the fisheries. Mr. Foley mildly rebuked the mem- ber from First Prince who took exception to the efforts of the fisheries officers to curtail poach- ing. He pointed out that in the long run the industry would be better served if the rules of the game were followed. "1 would suggest that the honourable mem- ber from First Prince confine

Mr. Foley expressed satisfac- tion with the amount of road work done in his district during the past year but added. "I am not saying it wasn't before time." He felt that a return to the old split-log drag would be the means of keeping a number of the roads in good shape in the spring. He deplored the lack of public spirit displayed in some sections of the country. "They would rather see water accumulate on a road. when a few minutes work would remedy the situation, than take the time to let it run off. Nobody will make a move unless the Government pays for it."

"I don't think that small farms are the swer to our agriculture problem." said Mr. Foley. "If the farmer is going to use all the power machinery that is in use today-, he needs more land to put the machinery into opera- tion. I

"We got four miles of light pavement but it should have been perman- ent pavement." Speaking further Mr. Gaudet made reference to the budget speech wherein it was noted that this year's was the largest yet brought down. "It would need to be big to do every- thing the Annandale member wants done in his district." he said.

Mr. Gaudet admitted that there was some poaching of lobsters in the Tignlsh area but said that it. was going on in other places and if there were no buyers in Sum- merside there is a possibility that the fishermen would not continue this practice. THE RAILROAD QUESTION

The Tignlsh member said that the Railroads move to curtail service would be bound to put a great many out of work. He agreed that the Railway was not getting many passengers but he noticed that there was a lot of freight moving.

Speaking of the establishment of a Department of Labour. Mr. Gaudei expressed the hope that something would be done in re- gard to the scale of wages paid in the Province. He could not un- derstand why Government con- tractors could not pay the same on the Island as they were pay- ing in New Brunswick. He said

the cost of living here was equal to that in any other Province.

"There is not one good cross- country road in my district" said Mr. Frank Myers speaking on the Budget debate in the Legislature Thursday. He criticized the Min- ister of Public Works and High- ways for not giving proper main- tainance to the cross roads and claimed at the same time that the First District of Queen's which he represents has 316 miles of road while only 18 miles was improved. "It is not a bright picture." he claimed.
