2 cups sifted flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder. 1 teaspoon soda. 1.3 teaspoon salt. 1,5 cup shortening, 1.-i cup sugar, 1,4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed. 2 egg yolks, 1 tea- spoon vanilla. 3 tablespoons milk. I package semi-sweet chocolate bits. 2 egg whites, 1 cup brown sugar. ti cup chopped salted pea- nuts.

Sift together, and set aside, the flour. baking powder. soda and salt. Blend the shortening. granu- lated sugar and brown sugar (la cup). Add the egg yolks. vanilla and milk. Add the flour mixture -- this will make a dry, crumbly mix- ture. Press dough into a. 15 x 10- Inch greased pan. sprinkle the chocolate bits over dough and press gently. Top with meringue made by beating the egg whites until stiff. and adding the 1 cup brown sugar gradually while beating. Sprinkle the meringue with the chopped salted peanuts. Bake ii: 325 degrees F. about 30-35 minutes. Yield: 40 2 x 2-inch squares.
