Gold prices ragged in 10w vol- ume and the senior group posted only a minor gain for Teck Hughes with Dome, I-Iollinger, Kerr Add- ison, Lake Shore and McIntyre down fractions. Aunor 5 and Sig- ma 20 cents. Better juniors were Conlarum. Detta, Negus. Stada- cona while losers included Buff- adlson. Campbell, Chesterville. Cochenour, Delnite, Dickenson, Eldona, Juliet. Kirkland Lake, Pioneer. San Antonio, Sylvanite. For the base metals Smelters add- td l 1-8 at 88. Nickel 1-8 at 33 5-8, Norando 3-8 at. 43 1-8 with losers Falconbridge. Hudson Bay, Labrador, Quemont. Sherrltt, Steep Rock_ East Sullivan, Eureka were up about. five cents each.

Western oils listed 6 gains, 7 losses and z unchanged; mining issues 54 gains, 84 losses and 62 llnchanged.

Paper Stocks Push Ahead At Montreal

MONTREAL. Oct. 14 - (OP)- Papers, reaching several new highs and posting several gains of a point or more. pushed ahead vigor- ously in trading on the stock ex- change and curb market here to- day. Other industrial groups, par- ticularly beverages. were ahead. oMlDSS were dull and mixed.

Closing index averages listed banks up .11 to 25.74; utilities off .1 to 76.2; industrlals up 1.1 to 121.4; papers up 5.79 to 376.10 and golds up .17 to 78.69. Volume was approximately 72.200 industrial shares and 105.800 mining shares-

Brown and Consalicicrd were the big traders in the rcpcr group pushing ahead l-4 on a turnover of 12.125 shares and i-2 on a turn- over of 8.821 shares respectively. Heaviest individual gainer was International which jumped 1 1-2 points on a turnover of 2.470 shares. Closing at new highs Wefe Poyvell River and M. and O ahead 1-2 at 39-1-2 and 3-4 at 24 1-4 respectively.

Up a point eat-h were Howard smith at 31, St. Lawrence Pfd. at I39 and Bathurst "B" at '1 1-2. Abitibi Common was fairly act- ive adding l-2 at l8 3-4 as was Price which added 5-8 at 66 1-2. Fraser pushed nhead 3-4 at 55 l-Z and Abltibi Pfd. 3-8 at. 20 7-8. Donnacona and Dryden advanced minor fractions. An exception to the trend was Bathurst "A" which touched a new low of ‘.12, ddwn i-4.

Beverages again showed strength and activity. Canadian Breweries, with a turnover of 3.770 shares, went ahead 1 5-8 points at 24 3-4- National Breweries added 1 l-Z points at 45. Seagrams and Sicks were up 1-4 at l9 3-4 and 1-2 at 15 respectively. Up l0 cents were Canadian Breweries‘ Rights on a ‘urnover of 22.278.

In utilities Power Corp. added 3-4 at 13 3-4 and Bells Rights 1-_4 cent at 4 7-8. Brazilian lost l-‘il at 21 l-8 and Bell l-4 at 165 3-4. Agoma soared to a new yearly high of 45 1-4 ahead 3 1-2 points] in steels.

Other industrial gainers includ- ed Dominion Stores up 1. Lmvney l, and Consolidated Smelting 3-8. Up minor fractions were Canada Cement, Bank of Montreal and Royal Bank. Losers included Hud- son Bay Mining and Alcoa Pfd.. l-2, B. A. Oll 1-4 and Brand and Milieu ".-' 5 cents.

NEW YORK. Oct. 14 —(AP)-- Bullish forces resumed control of the stock market today and lead- ing issues were given one of their broadest and liveliest upswing: of the past yenr or so.

Buying demand piled up over the Monday holiday and activity in the forenoon amounting to 710.- 000 shares was the best for this per- iod since May 19. Steels paced the initial rise, followed‘ by circuits, motors, oils, rails and u wide ll- sortment of lndustrlals. There were subsequent slowdowns but the llrker tape generally maintained a fast gait. Advances of 1 to more than 5 points were widespread at the close. The day's aggregate 1f 1.810.000 shares compared with 1,120,000 Friday and was a top since May l9.

Canadian issues were mostly steady at. closing. Distillers Sea- grams gained 1-8 while Dome Mines lost 1-8 and McIntyre drop- ped i-2. On the curb, Lake Shore and Giant Yellow Knife were in- active.
