Acting Up

The UPEI Theatre Society (UTS) has been planning lots of mischief for awaiting students and faculty. Soon, that mischief will start to spread it's chaos across campus.

On the bulletin is a new event called Late Nite @ the Wave. Our first show will be this Tuesday, October 14, starting at 9pm. (Yes, we realise this is somewhat similar to "Late Nite @ the Mac." But it's different, trust me.) Come watch our members act, sing, dance, and perform a variety of skits, monologues, and songs. This Tuesday you can enjoy the musical stylings of Sharon Eyster, Kelsey Barrie, and Maria Campbell, the comedic stylings of Gary Vincent and Aaron Myers, the odd stylings of Marieve MacGregor, and the MC stylings of Devin Gillis. Also, prepare your- selves for some theatre-type trivia! There will be a prize for the most knowledgeable thespians.

These variety shows are to help support the Theatre Society - obtain and renovate a new home and lounge for theatre events on campus. Since the demolition of the Alumni Gym and the Barn, it has been very difficult to find a location for Theatre Society events. The stage in Steele Hall is not easy to access and is often occupied by music students, as it should be. The Duffy Amphitheatre is more of a large, slanted class- room rather than an ideal produc- tion site. The new stage in the Student Centre is entirely unusable for our requirements. UTS will need extra funding to move larger events off campus as well, such as to the Arts Guild or the Carrefour. Therefore, variety shows are a must. A $2 donation is recom- mended. There will be a basket at the door for said donations. These

variety shows will go on every month at the Wave, and they'll be kick-ass great.

This past month UTS has been hosting Improv nights every now and again, where you can show up and let loose. At Improv night, you must participate. It's no fun if you don't. Really, you'd feel like an ass (or ‘donkey’) if you just sat there immobile. The evenings start slow with group games and work up to games with 2-4 people performing. If you'd like to try but are a little intimidated, fear not. You'll learn some techniques and grow as you go. Besides, every- one else has to get up and make an ape of themselves too.

The next Improv Night will be Friday, October 24, 7:00pm until 9:00pm, in the Main Faculty Lounge. These gatherings will be held every fortnight (two weeks) at the same time and place. Cookies and lemonade will be provided.

The last vital bit of informa- tion concerning the UTS is the upcoming AUDITIONS for the one- act plays. The one-acts always have a great audience turn out and are known for exploiting some very entertaining moments. The AUDITIONS will be on Wednesday, October 15 from 3:00pm-5:00pm, and Thursday from 4:00pm- 6:00pm. They will be held in the basement of the Robertson Library Building, Room 05. Look for signs in the breeze- way pointing you in the right direc- tion. Do not prepare anything in advance, the AUDITION will con- sist of reading from several parts of the three plays. You will have a short preparation time.

The plays in question are to be performed from November 20-22 in the Duffy Amphitheatre. | know | said it's not ideal, but it's the best we've got.
