Loxpon, Oct. 26.—The entire press scouts the idea of the possession of Fasboda coming within the sphere of the dis- cussion.

The St James Gazette says: ““We are prepared to negotiate the qnestion of the western frontier of the Babr-el-Ghazel district. But we must control the Nile» both baoke and watersheds, from its course to the sea ”

The Globe thinks the Marquis of Salis- bury has made clear that Major Marchand must quit Fasboda without copui-ions, adding : “Until thatis done there can be no discussion of the French claims in Africa.”

Continuing, the Globe points out the significant announcement ia ‘Seneral Kit- chever’s report that he sent gunboats south trom Sebat, towards Meshra~Or-Rek, the principal wade centre of the Babr-El- Chasaal region, with instructions to estab- lish outposts, and tbat before he left Sou-~ dan he completed arrangements for the maintepance of those stations,

The Giobe then adds: “This move brings our position down to the eighth pirallel of vorth latitude and the valley of the Bahr-E!~Ghasal at this momeat is under the rule of the Khedive. It will be interesting to see the effect of this revelation upoa the French government.”

The Pall Mall Gazette concludes that the Freneb governwent has been given to understand that wholly apart from the Fashoda question, its title to the territory abounding on the left bank of the Nile is “rejected as utterly untevableand France must accept the position or take the conse- quences.”

The Westminister Gazette suggests as a solution that the Frenca be granted “way- leave” and ‘‘encalve” for commercial! pur- poses in the Babr El-Ghesal district. (“Way-~leave” is the right of way over anothers ground. ‘Enclave ’ is to sbut in to enclose a terriory within the territories of another.)

The French papers, today, are more hopeful and believe that.a pscific solu< tion of the dispute will be fonad.

The English newspapers are full of naval particulars, but the only fresh deve~ lopment is of the order received at Ports- mouth to prepare allthe ships of the fleet snd the reserve for immediate mobiliza- tion. Evght additional warships there, in consequence, commenced cosling this morning and working parties were imme - diately placed on board the other reserve vessels at Portsmouth.

Although not conwected with the war preparations much attention bas been attracted to a request received by the Clyde shipbuilders from the British admirality for tenders for four new first class battle- ships, a first class cruiser and twelve torpedo boat destroyers, The dis: inguish~ ing features isthe iscreased armament, which, it's betieved, will make the battle- ship?, wh 0 ready torservice,the most powerfu! vessele of their class afloar. They willtave a speed of 19 knois. Tne craiser will be of 14,100 tons and will be desis ned toxteam twenty three knots. All the vessels will mount evceptionally strong quick flrivg gaps.

The Literary society held its first meet~ ing last Friday evening. A very able and intelligent slaff of officers was appointed : President, Rev G U Jackson; Vice Presi- dent, Rev C Jackson; Secretary, Mr G Simpson. Judging trom the above staff we enticipated a season of literary sport.

Sir,—A large number of men are still employed io the work of straightening (?) | the curve in the railway at North Wilt ‘shire. The distance saved by this work | will be about balf a mile; the time saved between Charlottetown and Summerside will be about a minute and abalf. ‘There are four or five curyes on the new line, one of which in much sbrrper thau any on the old, and if there were any danger on the old line, it will be increased on the new. The cost will probably reach forty thou- sand dollare. I would ask anyone who has achance todo soto takea careful look over this new track, and then stop avd censider what the benefit to Prince Edward Island would have been if this $40,000 had been devoted to the advance- ment of our fruit industry or to the starting of an experimental farm in the Province.
