Laip To Rest.—The funeral of the late Miss Myrile Newsqme, votice of whose death bas already appeared in the Daity Examiner, took place on Tuesday at 2 o'clock, from the residence of her unele, Warren J. Newsome. The pall-bearers were, Abijah McLean, Allie McLeaa, William Collings, Henry Cameron, Came eron, Irviog Howatt and Albert’ Baat. The deceased was universa!ly respected in the community aa was evidenced by the large concourse of people that attended the funeral to pay the r last tribute of respecr. Rev. D. Price,Pastur of the Tryon Baptist Chureh,conducted the serv ce at the house as well as at the grave.

WasuinGrox, December 29.—The ex~ pected conference between Secretary Alger and Hon. Mr. Siftondid not take place today. Secretary Alger had overrated his strength and found that he was not sufficiently recovered to undertake the work of arranging details for the relief of the expedition. The Candadian visitors are to remain in Washington for a few days, however, so that the conference ia merely postponed for a stort time.
San Dieco, Cai., Dec. 29.—The British erviser Leander and the torpedo destroyer Virago have arrived on their way to Esquimalt. The ships left Portsmouth, England, last August, sailing at an aver- age speed of twelve knots. The crniser Phaeton, with the destroyer Sparrow Hawk, following the Leander and Virago, and is expected to arrive here within two weeks. The Phaeton and Leander are sister ships, as also the 8parrow Hawk and Virago. Werth these vessels added to the E-quimalt squadron Great Britain will have tne strongest fleet by far that has ever assembled in the Pacific ocean.
