A Winter Watering Place.

ST. ANGUSTINE—HOW THE DAYS PASS.

SCENES AT

After a pretty thorough acquaintance with Florida towns, I have found none 80 desirable for winter residence at St. Augustine. Its natural situation poiats it out as the future watering place of the State, With the Mantazas river,which is really an arm of the sea, on one side; and just beyond it over the low sand beaches of Anticosti Island, the ocean, its sea air is laden with ozone, while the land breeze brings balsamic oders from the eighteen miles of pine forest that stretches from it unbroken to the St, Jobn’s. The days through the winter are warm and sunny, with a cool breeze at night. Visiting the convent of tbe Sisters of St. Joseph just south of the plaza, to inspect the fiae display of laces and Spanish and Mexican handiwork in textile fabrics there to be seen, walks to the orange groves and gardens on the outskirts of the town, drives to Mag- nolia Grove, Ponce de Leon Spring, and the Bridge of Sighs, are the principal employment of visitors. A feature of much interest to visitors is the guard- mount which is held every morning at call of bugle, in a field nearly opposite the United States barracks. Just below is & most interesting spot—the United States Military Cemetery—where,under

The Spirit of the Times says that 352 horses trotted heats ia 2.30 or bet- ter during the year 1883, agaiost 285 performers in 1882 and 260in 1881, showing a gain of 67 horses last season over the previous year and 92 over the year 1881, The new comers in the 230 circle number one hundred and ninety-two (192), against one hundred and fifty-two (152) the proceeding year. One hundred and sixty (160) horses previously in the 2.30 list trotted in 2.20 or better in 1883. Of this number seventy-four (74) reduced their records eight (8) equalled their old marks, and seventy-eight (78) failed to do so. These figures conclusively demonstrate that “trotting is an ever-increasing in- terest, and that 1883 far outstrips its predecessors. The youngest, also, have shown that their prospects were never brighter than at present,as fifteen (15) five-year-olds,and Carrie U., a two-year-old, appeareon the list, and this is not all; the five-year-old record has been reduced to 2.103, by the in- comparable Jay Eye See; the four- year-old to 2.18}, by Bonita, who came allthe way from California to Kentucky, with a three-yeareold record cf 2. 244, to accomplish it,and three- year-old honours have been wrested from Phil Thompson by the filly ef our choice, Hioda Rose (record 2.193), who has proven a winner against time and fleet-footed competitors ever since she began her career asa yearling, Of the borsus, the most notable green ones are
