F'R.ANKE'UR.T, (AP)-Field Mar- shal Gerd von Rundstedt obeyed Adolf Hitler to the bitter end of the Nazi Reich. But he remembered the Fuehrer with hatred and con- tempt.

In his apartment at Hannover. the Prumian soldier spent his last. days in his gloomy invalidism.

On the eve of his 77th birthday last Dec. 12, he brbke his own iron- clad rule against contact with the press as a favor to his former cli1i"ef of staff, Guenther Bluemcn- tr t.

”l'here is no hope for German reunification without war -- and nobody wants war," he said.

Hitler? The old field marshal stiffened whenever the name came up and referred to him mostly as "that bohemian corporal."

Four times, Hitler relieved von Rundstedt of military commands, but thrice called him back to serve the Fatherland in a crisis."

In 1944, he was dismissed at the climax of the Normandy cam- paign, having told the Fuehrer's supreme headquarters, "make peace. idiots!"

In March, 1945. came his last ouster as' the Western Allies slash- ed deep into Germany.

"Hitler had a mania. about steel and concrete," von Rundstedt re- called. "It caused his delusion gbout the Atlantic wall, made up mostly of propaganda.

"We had some steel and concrete bunkers along Cape Gris Nez we showed to visiting personalities- thc same bunkers to each new group.

"But for hundreds of miles. we had virtually nothing. An outpost here, another there, of soldiers squatting in sand dunes or riding back and forth on bicycles."

Show-er For Springfield couple

On Wednesday evening, January 21st, a large number of relatives and friends from Springfield and surrounding districts gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Matheson to tender them a. mis- cellaneous shower in honor of their marriage which toop place on Dec- ember 30th.

After all had assembled. the bride and groom were escorted to their seats of honor. The prettily decorated baskets of gifts were carried in by the Misses Lena Mac- Kay and Jean MacLeod and were opcned by Miss Freda Hickox. The accompanying verses were read by Mrs. John I-lickox and Miss Leone MacKay. The gifts were arranged on the table by Miss Elsie Mayne.

The groom on behalf of his bride thanked all present for their lovely gifts, after which all Joined in singing "For They Are "Jolly Good Fellows." A delicious lunch was served by the ladies. Music dancing and social intercourse soon brought a very enjoyable evening to a close and all departed for their homes wishing Mr. and Mrs. Mathcson many years of wedded bliss.

-The women of Long River Presbyterlan and Burlington Ang- lican Churches met with those of Long River United Church at the home of Mrs. Andrew C. Johnstone on Friday afternoon February 20, for the World Day of Prayer Ser- vice, prepared by African Chris- tians and issued by the Women's Inter-Church Council of Canada.

Mrs. Murdock MacLeod, United W. M. S. president, led in the Call to Worship. other leaders were Mrs. William J. Profitt, Ang- lican and Mrs. Allan A. Campbell, Presbyterian.

Prayer was offered by Mrs. Wil- fred Campbeli, Mrs; John E. Cousins. Miss Christy B. John. stone, Mrs. James MacLeod, Mrs. Kenneth MacLeod and Mrs. A. A Campbell.

An address relative to the theme. "Walk as Children of Light" was

who incidentally pointed out the little known fact that the World Day of Prayer for Women actually had its beginning some 60 years ago when a handful of women in England began meeting for pray- er. Mrs. Campbell rose to thank the hostess and the other ladies for their gracious hospitality and 5;. pressed her pleasure in the fact that the fine weather had made it possible for so- many to attend and especially noted the older ladies who were not always able to be present on this annual Day of Prayer.

Words of appreciation were also spoken by Mrs. Profitt on behalf of the Anglicans. Mrs. Johnstone, and Mrs. Maci..eod each respond- ed, the latter welcoming into the group several who were attending to! the first time.
