About David Harum.

Surely the best advertised boek of the year is “David Harum.” Most of the advertising given it, however was of the free order and given by news- papers in their reading columns. Wide- awake booksellers were quick to take advantage of this, and display the name ef the book and its price in their daily paper advertising. It seems to me, aside from nswspaper advertising, the best sort of publicity the book could have would be window placards bear- ing in quotation marks some of David Harum’s quaint sayings, of which these are the best :

Journalism Influential for Good.

No modern institution is so far-reach- ing and potential in its influences, and no agency more powerful for impress— ing public opinion, than a free, honest and untrammeled press. But these latter conditions are necessary, indis pensable and inexorable. As no in- dividual whose meral character is not above reproach can hope to exercise a great influence in the community in which he lives, so no newspaper that is insensible to the requirements of re- spectable society can expect to bea factor in the moulding of public senti— ment. A self respecting community demands that a newspaper shall! also be self respecting and any failure in this regard must unavoidably involve the forfeiture of popular esteem.— Baltimore Herald.
