With the dissolu‘ion on Saturday of the Legislative Assembly and the official announcement of July 28rd as the dale of the general pro- vincial elections, the political situa- tion has advanced to the warming- up point, and mun now until elec- tion day interest in provincial af- fairs will be predominant.

During the latter part of last week three rousing Conservative conventions were held, in Third and Fifth Prince and First Queen's

Counties respectively, at which nominations were unanimously tendered Hon. Thomas MacNutt,

Minister of kjriculture, Hon, A, p, Arsenauli. KB. Mr. p. w. Manson. Mr. D. F. MacNeill, Mr. Thomas Wlgmore, and Capt. Theophilus Beaton.

The candidates in each case are men of widely known ability and popularity. Hon. Mr. MacNutt. un- beaten except on one occasion since his first entry into politics in 1921, stands higher today than ever in public esteem, and has proved an able administrator of his depart- ment. Hon. Mr. Arsnnault, also a victor in many hard fought politi- cal contests, is one of the leading Acadian representatives of the Pro- vince, whose ability, both as a speaker and legislator, has long been recognized. Mr. wigmores rc- nomination in First Queens was, of course, a foregone conclusion. As a representative of the district during the past four yrzars he discharged his duties with a conscientiousness which was noted and commented upon by members of both sides of the House. Never absent from his Dlace, always able and ready to dis- cuss helpfully any legislation of importance to his community or the Province, a loyal suppozter of his party and an indefatigable worker for his constituency, his record i5 indeed a creditable one.

Messrs. Manson, ivieciqsiii, and Benton, though new in the political field. are also gentlemen oi wide experience and ability, and will undoubtedly make able representa- tives of their districts.

Last evening another equally suc- cessful convention was held at Sou- ris. at which Hon. H. D. MacLean and Mr. Arthur F. McQuaid, KC, were unanimously nominated as Conservative candidates for the First District of King's. Mr. Mac- Ican, who is a con of Senator Mac- Lean, is one of our leading Con- lervative parliamentarians and nis knowledge and experience, particu- larly in financial matters, have been a great asset to the present Govern- ment. Mr. McQuaid, who suczeeds Hon. Dr. MacDonald. the federa~ candidate, in this contest, is also a man of outstanding qualifications. in whom the constituency will find able representation.

There now remains to be held only one Conservative nominating convention, namely, for the Second District of King's. The Liberals have still to nominate candidates for First Queens, and also a suc- cessor to Mr. G. W. Ramsay, one of tlfe Liberal candidates in 'I‘hlrd Prince, who was to have run against Hon. Mr. MaoNutt but whose decis- ion to retire from the contest has been officially announced. Perhaps 1n view of Mr. MacNutts undoubted strength in the constituency, the seat may go to him by default. In any case, it is generally ‘conceded that he will carry it by a large ma- jority. _

The recent illness of Mr. W. M. Lea, Opposition lzafcr, is sincerely regretted by evd-y one. It is the hope of Conservatives asgweli as Liberals that the improvement noted yesterday will continue and that he will soon be fully restdred to health and strength. and be able to take a vigorous part in the campaign.

“lest We Forget," the official Canadian war picture now showing at the HinoqEdward Theatre, is indeed what it professes to be-an unforgettable record, of the part which our soldiers played in the struggle in France and Flanders in those awful years 1914-1918. The moral does not need to be told in words—it is there, on the screen; scene after scene, taken on the spot, of sudden, dead-filled trenches, of wasted cities and landscapes re- sembling nothing more nearly than Dante's vision of the Inferno. It is not surprising that years were al- lowed to elapse before the release of these pictures was permitted. Yet it is well that they should now be re- leased. and seen by every Canadian citizen.

Mr. Tufts has devoted his life to the study of migratory and other birds, and can speak with the voice of an authority when he of- fers criticism or advice upon them, There should be a large at- tendance of those interested to hear him.

Mussolini and Hitler both believe in training up the youth of their respective countries in the way they want them to go, and nobody can claim that that is the way of peace. But as both dictators want expansion of territory in the shape of "places in the Sun," it must be admitted they are going the right way to attain their end. It in up to the other fellow to go and do likewise, or allow himself to be made a door mat by the aggressive expensionists.

Probably the Mounted Police will handle the unemployed marchers the way the London police handle similar marches there. They say, "All right. you can march from Hyde Park to any given place but you must march at our pace.” They then start a five mile an hour clip, with policemen to right of them. policemen to left of them, police- men in front of them and police- men in the rear of them, not to speak of policemen posted every half a dozen yards along the route of march. 1t is not long before the marchers begin to fall out of the rank and they are moved on in other directions by the stationary police, and by the time the Journey's and is reached it. is seldom there are other than police in the pro- session.

Even in a ricpnblle there ll no reason to wonder at the tremend- ous wave of public enthusiasm in England marking the silver jubilee of King George and Queen Mary. When a man has held a job for twenty-five years and done the prescribed work as faithfully as the record shows in this instance, it is a suitable occasion for rejoicing and celebration. . . . Side by side with the survival of the British monarchical establishment we have witnessed the healthy expansion of British dCmOCTlvy- It is one of the outstanding proofs of the validity of the theory of popular rule. King George has fitted in with this theory. He has laboured with it and for it, and today he is at once the head of a magnificent Commonwealth and a benign and beloved sovereign as weii__pmyiq_ enqe Journal.

The most dramatic factor in thin progress has been the coming of the German Jews. They cannot be called refugees because they feel that they are coming home, and the Palestine language speaks of them as an "Aliya" or homecoming. At the World Economic Confer- ence in London in i933, Canada agreed to take 1,671,002 ounces of silver annually off the market and to make use of it for monetary pur- chases. This was the portion al- lotted to Canada as part of the agreement of the five chief pro- ducing countries to take 35,000,000 ounces yearly of! the market for a period of four years, commenc- ing with 1934. In part, this obliga- tion isbeing carried out by the use of silver in the reserve of the Bank of Canada and, in part, by the ad- dition of a sliver dollar to Canad- ian currency.

In countries where polished rice furnishes the main supply of food an ailment known as heri-beri is the most common cause of ill health. In this country although we cat large amounts of sugar, starch and white flour, as a people we cer- tainly do not suffer with beri-berl. This is because we eat enough of foods containing vitamin B. to make up for the large amounts of sugar, starch and white flour eaten.

However there are a number of individuals suffering with tiredness, "digestive disturbances" and con- stipation due to the fact that they confine their diet almost entirely to the starchy foods containing no vit- amin B, ' .

One of the first symptoms is loss of appetite which returns immed- iately with the addition to the diet of food containing vitamin B.

A second symptom is a loss of tone in the muscles of the intes- tines, which, while not paralyzing the intestinal movements, slows them so much that constipation is the result.

That lack of vitamin B slows us up mentally has been demonstrated in numerous experiments.

Pbrtunately the great majority of us get enough vitamin B in our reg- ular diet. Foods rich in vitamin B are eggs, cabbage, cauliflower, green peas, lettuce, green PBlJlJers, pota- toes. spinach, watercress. apples, bananas, canteloupe. grapefruit, oranges, lemons, orange juice, peach- es, tomatoes, brewer's yeast.

Education of adults is being promoted both in Europe and America. in Scotland, much in- terest is being taken in an offer by the Marquis of Lothian to establish at Newbattle Abbey, his Midlothian seat, a residential educational coi- lege for the whole country. The

Abbey, which originated as a Cistercian foundation of the twelfth century, and which is

situaed in the valley of the Bk, was the scene recently on a con- ferenoe convened by the Scottish branch of the British instituted. Adult Education’, and presided over by its chairman. Principal Sir Robert Rait. C. B. E. The building has been offered to Scotland by Lord Lothian for use as a residen- tial education college, which would provide an annual thirty-week course for adult students. There would also be accommodation for shorter courses, summer schools and conferences of various kinds. The Lothian offer includes about 135 acres of gardens, woodlands and grazing park, as well as other buildings. a library, and a P0144011 of the famous picture gallery. sidered that several members of Parliament attended, and, of course, men prominently con-

nected with education. Sir Gorfrey Collins, M. B, Secretary of State for Scotland, announced that the Government was prepared to make an annual grant on a capita- tion basis of about £20 a year for each full session pupil, and the Earl of Eigin, represetning the Carnegie United Kingdom Trust, stated that his colleagues had authorized him to offer £12,000 for reconstructing and equipping the building.
