The disease de- velops in trom twency-four hours to three days. Persons infected in Europe can not, therefore, possibly reach America before the disease has shown itself. If the quarantine officers are sufficiently careful and honest and firm, they can prevent the landing of passengers from «ny infected ship. The season is now well advanced ; the cool weather is here. Consequently there is no necessity to be scared about the matter—a ‘“‘scare” is one of the most effective aids to the march of cholera.

The deed disease almost invariably ori- ginates in India. It was mentioned by Hippocrates (400 B.C.)and by otherancient physicians. It usually recurs every twelve years, as a result of the Hindvo festivals at the great tempie. It is engendered in the filthy tents of the pilgrims who number millions. Every successive epidemic of cholera has been carried up the Persian Gulf from Bombay, Surat, Kurachee and ports on the West coast of India. In the Bombay Presidency there are ninety-four shrines, to which large pilgrimages are made and from which the disease is brought to the sea cvast and spread throughout the civilized world.

The great point in the whole course of the disease is not to be too busied or agi- tated, or anxious to do too much and too quickly. Absolute rest and warmth, the careful use of food and weak stimulants, aided by smal! quantities of astringents and opiates will, it is stated, save a good proportion of cases.

Educational.

Wirth the close of the holidays comes such « demand for school books that pater is apt to change the Scriptural quotation and say ** Of the getting of books there isnoend.” Certainly our children will not suffer from want of a sufficient number and variety of subjects for study in the schools.

It is pleasing to note that the number of children in attendance is well maintained. At Upper Prince Street School there were yesterday 513; at Queen Square School, 245, and at West Kent Street School, 364. The excessive number at Upper Prince Street School is due to several causes, to wit : popularity of the teachers, excellence of situation, and most of all, perhaps, the fact that pareats generally like to have their girls taught apart from the boys. We have two public schools for buys, only one for girls. Girls as well as boys are taught in West Koent Street School; but soms of the boys are rcugh and rude, and the girls preferto be taught apart. The consequence is that Prince Street School is overcrowded. Either the schoolrooms must be enlarged or the trus- tees must exert their authority and force some of the psreats to send some of their girls to the other schools. Co-educativn is not successful, in practice, in Charlotte- town.

We cannot forget, in this connection, that Roman Catholic girls do not, as in Halifax and St. John, obtain instruction in schools receiving the aid of the Govern- ment. There, if we mistake not, the nuns are permitted to pass the examination and receive salaries from the Provincial and Civic treasuries. Here, this has not, here- tofure, been done. Our Roman Catholic boys have all along been taught in a separ- ate peblic school,—and nothing has hap- pened. The Roman Catholic girls of Hali- fax and St. John have been taught in separate public schoois, with the convents for school rooms and the nuns for teachers, —and, we are assured, peace and harmony prevails. More than that, no one there feels—as we in Charlottetown must feel— that one portion of the community does not receive its fair share of the amount ex- pended out of the public treasury for pur- poses of education. It, certainly, is hard

and unfair that the plan which has been successfully adopted here in respect to the education of Roman

Catholic boys cannot be adopted in respect to the education of Roman Catholic girls, — that Protestant girls have their separate school, supported by the public, while Roman Catholic psrents—some of them the poorest of our citizens—are compelled to support the separate schools in which their daughters are educated. If this unfairness be due to a refusal on the part of the nuns to take licenses as public school teachers, ao blame can attach to the public. But it is much to be desired—for the sake of fair play—that an arrangement be made similar to that which has been successfully carried out in St. John,

St. Dunstan’s’ College prospectus and course of studies is also at hand. We note that the Rev. Dr: Morrison has been ad- vanced to the position of Rector, and that the Faculty includes ten professors. The curriculum includes a preparatory course intended te qualify students to enter either the commercial course or the classical course. Mathematics, physics, chemistry, natural history, philosophy, and religion - are studied at St. Dunstan’s.
