and may be the means of saving foxes for his owner. For those who may be interested in teaching a. dog what he should know and do on a ranch the following summary of training method swill be of iri- terest.

He must of course b¢ able to handle a fox. Even if used only as a watch-dog he is some day going to find himself loose with a. fox. un- less he is kept always outside the guard fence. If within the enclos- ure he is apt at any time to find a. fax running outside its pen, for the fox-proof and fool-proof pen hasn't yet been built.

MUST BE INTELLIGENT

First in his qualifications there- fore must be intelligence. Some breeds are easy to teach, others seem less able to pick up a new trick. Presumably, a fox would find a poodle good chewing. Many dogs could probably stand off a fox in a fght but would not be largo or strong enough to catch and hold it. until help came. But mere size isn't enough. Big dogs are apt to be slow and clumsy. The choice must fall on one that is fast on his feet, that has natural speed and agility- This narrows the field to only a. few breeds, of which the German shepherd, commonly called the pol- iice dog, can be considered one of the best. In additon to the above named qualifications this dog isn't- at all averse ‘to a rough-and-tumble encounter and a few bites don't bother him.

Prairie Provinces Suf- fering Heavily From Drought, Says Bank Report.

MONTREAL, Aug, 9. -- The past week has witnessed continued deter- ioration of crops in the Prairie Pro- vinces, says the telegraphic crop re- port of the Bank of Montreal issued here today. Rainfall has been limi- ted to small areas and most of the grain has matured too rapidly. Har- vesting will be early with yields much below average.

In. Quebec. recent rains have had a. beneficial effect on all growing crops, which generally are in a sat- isfactory condition, but more moist- ure is needed.

Heavy rains in Ontario during the past week have materially improved the condition of growing crops in most districts. In the southwestern portion of the province storms and high winds have caused some dam- age.
