Dawson, of Bridgewater, on pleasure bent and intending to pass three or four days sight-seeing in the most interesting city of thecontinent. Concerning “annex- ation,” Mr. De vson said last night that he dido’t believe that a single constit- uency in the Dominion of Canada would tolerate a candidate who was suspected of having even aslight leaning toward an nexation to the United States. A careful record kept at Yale for eight years shows that non-sinokers are 20 per cent. taller, 25 per cent. heavier, and have 60 per cent more lung capacity than smokers. A recent graduating class. at Amherst presented a similar difterence in favor of non-smokers, who had gained jn weight 24 per cent. over the smokers, and in height 37 per cent., and aleo exceeded them in lwng capacity.

The Catholic directory for 1894, which has just been issued, gives the statistics of the Catholic Church in the United States. The Catholic population in many of the dioceses is approximated, and in the ab- seuce of exact figures the compilers of the directory are unable to say just how many Catholics there are in the United States. The directory gives the number as 8,902,- 033, but Catholic authorities claimed Jast year that there are at least 12,000,000.

A singular incident is related in the Congregationalist regarding a church which was seeking for a pastor,and sought that paper’s help. It was found that the Church offered an encouraging opportunity for the right sort of man and its needs were accordingly set forth. One of the tirst letters in response came from a min- ister without a charge who expressed an ardent desire to throw his whole energy into just such a fieid as that described. It turned out that the church in question was the very one which he had been serving only afew months before.

The deadly bacillus is everywhere. The weakly consumptive who goes into the country to draw new strength from fresh milk and good beef, little guesses that he is hastening his death. Yet such the scientists deelare to be quite po-sible. Tubereulo-is among ca.tle is declared to be prevalent in all civilized countries, and is so contagious that the introduction of one germ into the human bedy in milk or meat is suffic’ent by rapid multiplication to bring on the worst form of a disease in ashort time. It is some consolation to knew that Dr. Koch has discovered a means of identifying the existence of the disease in animals.

A thief broke isto a certain house early the other morning and found him- self in the music-room. Hearing foot-steps approaching he took refuge behind a screen. From eight to nine the eldest daughter had a singing lesson. From nine to ten o’clock the second daughter took a piano lesson. From ten to eleven o’cloek the eldest son had a violin lesson. From eleven to twelve the other son had a lesson on the flute. At twelve-tifteen all the brothers aud sisters assembled and studied an ear splitting piece for voice, piano, violin and flute. The thief staggered out from behind the screen at twelve ferty-five, and, falling, at their feet, cried, “Fur mercy’s sake have me arrested!”

During @ quarrel between Anthony Kospile and his wife at Shamokin last Friday their four-months-old baby was thrown from the kitchen window. A Newfoundland doz, belonging to Joseph C. Ohaskies, passing at the time, picked the infant up and carried the child to his kennel, passing over a creek en route. When the domestic differences in the Kospile household had been adjusted the parents thought of their child. A search for it began and was continued for two hours in vain. Then a faint wail was heard from ihe Ohaskies kennel. Thither the father ran and found the little one kicking in the atraw, while the big dog watched it and kept gaard at the entrance of his lowly home.

A declaration of marriage says the New York World, is simpler even than it used to be in Scotland. You ask a lady to marry you by merely offer- ing her a flower, or taking a light from a cigarette, if it happens to be in her mouth; and your family and the bride’s family have to put up at least $1,000 a side for a dowry. Unlike Japan, the Siamese women are treated as equals, but they can seldom read or write. The principal im pediment in the way of marriage is that each year is named after an animal, and only certain animals are allowed to inter- marry. For instance, a person born in the year of the rat cannot marry with a person born in the year of the dog, or a person bors in the year of the cow with a person born in the year of the tiger; and there are similar embargos about months and days.

Sim,—Whry is the poor money withheld for the last three years, till summer is nearly over? This is the case in Belfast at any rate. Is it not heartless to withi- hold the small pittance from the poor ? When seed grain, etc.. are so scarce, this morey should not be delayed. In the ‘Outhern section of Belfast last year, or vear before iast, Mr. H. C. MeDonald, M. P. P., bad the distribution of it it him- self, and he held on to some of the money till harvest time. One poor old woman had to have several jetters written for her

to our junior M. P. P. before she was paid, and another is said to have been paid, or offered to be paid, by Mr. H. ©. McDonald on Sunday, when

the dog days were over. It is said she re- fused to take the money because it was the Sabbath day. Is there anyone to show justice to the poor in this matter ? J.

FESTIVALS ON FRIDAYS, Sin,—As members of the Church of England we are constantly reminded, both by the circulation of anti-ritualistic tracts, effusions from the pulpit, private. ad monitions, etc., of the great necessity of being true to the “Principles of the Reformation.” Now, among the “Princi- ples of the Reformation,” as iaid down by the Reformers of our church in the Book of Common Prayer, will be found a table of all the “Days of Fasting, or Abstinence, that are to be observed in the Church of England throughout the year,” and in that table the following rubrick : “All Fridays in the year except Christmas Day.” As it is not, in itself, any sign of true spirituality to observe fast days, so neither is if any sign of true spirituality to ignore them, especially when we have solemnly pro- mised to observe them; but to turn a fast into “a delightful concert, strawberry, and ice cream festival,” (as was done jast evening) naturally leads one to ask “Who are loyal to the principles of the Reforma- tion ?” ONLOOKER.

bP > 0 4S HOSPITALS EXEMPTION,

Sir,—I notice by your paper that at the annual meeting of the contributors to the P. E. Island Hospital, a few evenings ago, a resolution carried disapproving of the act passed at the last session of the Provincial Legislature exempting the two hospitals from taxation.

On its face this looxs a trifle peculiar. But the following facts will doubtless ex- plain why the resolution was passed :

Last year the Charlottetown Hospital premises were assessed at $12,000, and the amount of taxes was $120.

The Prince Edward Island Hospital premises were assessed at $3,500, upon which the tax amounted to $35.

The City Council recognizing the use fulness of these two institutions gave each au annual grant of $75, asa sort of offset to the taxes.

As a result of this arrangement the Prince Edward Island Hospital was in pocket the difference between $35 and $75, and the Charlottetown Hospital was out the difference between $75 and $120. Recognizing the unfairness of the treat- ment thus meted out, as well as the great value these institution are to the Prov- ince, the Legislature very properly decided that it was only right and just that they should be exempt from taxation, and passed the measure which the liberal- minded people who sustain the Prince Edwari isiand Hospital take exception to.

After the bill was passed, the City Council withdrew the grants to the hos- pibals. At all events, there is nothing in this year’s estimates for that purpose. This was the straw that broke the came]’s back.

So long as the shoe pinched the Char- lottetown Hospital people, there was no protest from the other institution. Bait directly the Charlottetown Hospita' was placed on a level with the Prince Edward Island Hospital in the matter of exemption from taxes, the protest came.
