An Island Community Mourns And Says No to Violence Against Women

The image of roses left in the snow outside L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal last December is a powerful one. This formed part of the community’s response to the tragic massacre of 14 university women.

On December 6, 1990 at 12:00 noon, roses will be laid at the engineering structure outside Duffy on the U.P.E.I. campus. The roses will be laid during 14 minutes of reflection -- one minute for each life lost.

We are asking you to show your support by buying a rose. Volunteers will be circulating throughout the campus with rose pledge sheets. Roses are $3.00 each. If you wish to lay your own rose you can pick it up on site prior to the ceremony or if you will not be attending, a rose will be laid for you. A tag with your signature will be attached to the rose.

Kate Kechnie, a local artist, was moved to create something of value and hope. In response to the massacre, Kate conceived of a memorial exhibition of 14 drawings to commemorate each unique life that was lost that day in December. All of the profits from the sale of the roses will be donated to aid in the framing of some of these drawings. The show will open on January 25, 1991 in the foyer of the Robertson Library. Kate Kechnie’s hope is to provide a space for people who have been so affected by these women's deaths, to contemplate the value of their lives.
