Athenians Distrust the Sultan.

Lonpox, May 25.~The Athens corres- pondent of the Times says that the in ventions of the Sultan are greatly distryst- ed here and it is believed that it is his policy to avoid negotiations for peace through the powers because he wants Edhem Pasha to march to Athens.

Ovrawa, May 25.—The cabinet was in session yesterday trying to agree on the features in dispute in the tariff amend- ments, There ie great want. of harmony in respect to some of the proposed amend. ments. Hon. Mr. Fielding is under bords to move the House into committee today and seems to be sorry for it.

Probably the first two days will he occu- pied with a discussion of the preferential clauses.

QUEEN BESS’ GHOST.

A GRENADIER OFFICER SAYS HE SAW IT IN ‘ WINDSOR CASTLE, neniindian

Queen Elizabeth's ghost has recently been seen walking in the libraty of Windsor Castle in broad daylight. To be more exact, a Lieut. in the Grenadier Guards, whose connections are highly respectable, asserts that he saw a female fiigure in black where no living person could be, and the librarian at Windsor says that his description tallies with that of the ap parition of the Virgin Queen who haunts that part of the castle. The story was first told in Le Petit Journal of Paris, and on the London Daily Mail’s, investigating the truth ofit the following extraordinary facts came out:

The officer 1s Lieut. A. St. Leger Glyn,a grandson of the first Lord Wolverton, who was a member of the banking house of Glyn, Mills & Currie and a nephew of Dr, Carr Glyn, the new Bishop of Peterborough. He is 27 years of age, the son of a soldier, and is described as a healthy,matter-of-fact young man. He was sitting in the library of Windsor Castle one afternoon reading a_ history of Dorsetshire, when he became aware of some one passing into the inner library.. He looked up and saw a female figure in black, with black lace on the head falling to the shoulders. Ele did not pay much attention to. it,, thinking it was some one reading in the inher room. Soon after, as it was 4 o'clock, an attendant came to close the library. Liews: Gdgn asked who the lady working in the other room was, and the atten- dant answered that there was no one else in the library. Lieut. Glyn insisted that a lady had just walked across the inner room.

“«Then where can she be?” asked the atten- dant.” She must Mave ‘gone out of a door in the eorner,” said the Lieytenant,; *‘But there is no door,” answered the ‘man. Lieut “Glyn thought no more about it, but the attendant reported the matter to Mr, Holmes, the librar-

Glyn was the only man that had seen it in medern times, . Since then Mr. Holmes has spent.much time in the library, day and night, if’ the hope of seeing the ghost. Lieut. Glyn has been questioned about the matter by the Dean of Windsor ‘and several niembers of the Royal family.

**At the far end of the gallery is a turret two windows of which looking on the wet, make a broadish space of light, against -which any figure traversing the gallery would he sharply silhoutted. On the south side of th: gallery—which was built by Queen Elizabeth, and used by her as a picture gallery in which she was accustomed to walk, and wheren she devised, or reflected upon, those masterpieces of statecraft which have made her reputation what it is—stands a fine chimney piece, over which a bust of the ‘Virgin Queen’ Jooks down somewhat severely upon the spot where her shade has been so recently seen,”

Here it is that Lieut. Glyn saw the appari- tion, which passed from him along the gallerv turned quic J, to the right, and disrppeard into the bay, from which in former umes a Staircase led to the terrace where Queen Elizabeth used to promenade. The Dean: of Windsor is ready to believe that Lieut. Glyn saw something supernatural, but he doubts that it wasthe Virgin Queen. He believes more strongly in the apparition some years a; of King Charles I , whose spirit is said to visit a house in the Canons close, opposite St. George’s Chapel one June 26, The last person to whom the ghost made 2 masifestation was Mrs. Boyd Carpenter, wife of the Bishop of Ripon, who oecypied the house as a Canon of Windsor, between 1882 and 1884. On June 26, late at night, while she was reading in her bedroom, waiting for her husband to come up, she heard steps approaching in the passage to the roomr’saw the..hasp Jilted andthe door slowly @pen, but nobody appeared. After a while the door was closed again, and she heard steps receeding in the corridor When her husband got upstairs she told him what had happened, and he recollected that it was the night on which the Royal Martyr was sup- posed to walk in that house.
