Tuplixfe yacht to lay its eggs. A recent visitor to Mr. Tup- linveays, the eggs are now the pro- perty of the State. Mr. Tupiln had surprised the bird one morning when moored in Boston harbour. The wild duck appeared to hover round-and Mr. Tuplin discovered in a coil of rope several eggs; every morning for some days after, a fresh egg would be added to the nest. Mr. Tuplin, being a lover of wild fowl, would have liked very much to ‘seep the eggs and see whether the bird would hatch them out; but wishing to take a little cruise up the river. and knowing that there is a fine of $1,000.00 for disturbing a wild birds eggs, he asked the officials what he should do when a wild chick lays her eggs on your property. They re- plied, "do not touch the nest." But said Mr. Tuplin, “the duck has her nest on the deck of my yacht and I want to go for a cruise." This was quite a surprise to the protectors of wild game, but after considering the matter they confiscated the eggs and. will try to hatch them out in an in- cubator. Mr. Tuplin went on his cruise, but he did not have the pleasure of watching the wild duck hatch out her young. Mr. Tupiin is expecting to sail his yacht down to Bummerside very shortly and will visit his old home in Lot lL-S.

Instrument flying was ordered to gather additional data for estab- lishing a commercial airline to the Orient.

The giant Pan American flying boat, weighing 19 tons, took of! from the lagoon here at 4:54 a. m. Mid- way time (12:54 a. m.. E.D.'1.)

An hour later Capt. Edwin C. Musick messaged that the crew was preparing to begin flying by instru- ments alone. This is accomplished by drawing the blinds on the cabin windows, necessitating the "crew's use of instruments for ascertaining direction, speed and altitude. OTTAWA, June l’1—Dominating, crushing monopolies or 'controlled. restricted industries were described to the House of Commons today by Premier R. B. Bennett as alter- native courses in Canadian com- meroe.

The House pushed almost through committee stage the gov- ernment bill deslgnatlng the tariff board a trade and industry com- mission, charging it with some of the duties outlined by the Mass Buying Commission. .

The Prime Minister outlined his alternatives while replying to at- tacks from the Liberals against one clause which gave the tariff board power to sanction price and production agreements among in- dividual manufacturers.

He put his alternative plans in these words: "Shall we permit creation of a condition that will prevent growl-h of monopolies and creation of monopolies by adequate restrictions and regulation, or shall we permit unrestrained oper- ation of free competition to the destruction ultimately of all but the fittest-and» I am using the word fittest in the sense of mean- ing the largest resources."

The companies law in its amended form, went further to stop false prospectuses than any similar legislation in the world, Mr, Bennett replied. He opposed a government sanction on an issue of securities because it carried a mark of authenticity which it might not warrant.

Liberal leader lifackcuzil- King took issue with Premier Bennett on whether the Combines Investi- gation Act had led to mergers and monopolies. I-le claimed the act was designed not to prevent mon- opolies but to stop them from act- ing detrimentally to the public. The offence was anti-social be- havior of the trusts.

Mr. King said the Price Spreads Commission recommended that monopolies be controlled by tariff reductions or patent rights with- drawal, but the government ap- parently took no action.

Nothing would be done under the provision for supervision of corporation security issues, predict- ed Mr. Ilsley. He maintained there should be a securities board which would have control of all is- sues of securities. .

Mr. Hanson said it would be def- initely wrong to allow the impres- sion-to go out that every stock is- sue had the approval of the gov- ernment. As a matter of practice there was a review of every issue of securities by the Secretary of State's department before _ new charters were isued. Under the new bill, where the Secretary of State considcrad an investigation of a company was needed, he could refer the matter to the commis- sion. BOSTON, June l7 —, United States Coast Guard officials today related the story o! the first cap- ture by a coast guard plane off the New England coast of a boat suspected of smussiins.

They said the speed boat Hobo of New Bedford was caught in little more than an hour yesterday off Chatham after it had outdis- tanced the patrol boat Faunce af- ter failing to heed a signal to halt.

The amphibian plane. CG 131, piloted by Lieut. P, S. Lyons, sighted the Hobo an hour after receiving a wireless message from the Faunce that she was unable to catch the speed boat. Lieut. Lyons fired a shot across the speed boat's bow, they said.

Later the boat, suspected of smuggling, was brought to Boston for search and the four mGHIiOBTa of its crew were questioned. No contraband was found aboard the boat, coast guardsmen reported. However, Lieut. Lyons reported sighting another boat, believed to be a supply ship for smugglers, 25 miles off the coast just before the Hobo was picked up by the Iihunce.

SAINT JOHN, N. 8.. June l’! _ A uniform national price policy for Canadian made products protected by tariff was characterized before the Tariff Board of Canada at its sitting here today as a means of curbing unfair andunethical com- petition.

It was also advocated in repre- sentations made by the.saint ‘John Board of Trade as a way of some- what tempering an alleged situation in which seven provinces of Can- ada are busdened by tariff and rail charges while the two provinces of Ontario and Quebec reap 85 per cent o1 the benefits.

Criticizing a. fiscal system which so centralized its benefits at the

expense of outlying provinces, a brief presented by F. M. Sclanders, commissioner of the Board of ‘Trade asked the appointment of a com- mission of old country experts to study this system and made 1e- commendations for bringing about a more equitable balance.

J. D. McKenna, presenting cer- tain phases of the board of trades case, pointed out that a price es- tablished for New Brunswick un- der a uniform national-prim policy would also apply in Ontario. This would prevent an Ontario manu- facturer frorn ruthlessly slashing prices in this province with the view of taking a New Brunswick manufacturer's home market away from him and driving him out of business. _

"If the tariff, ofCanada is to confer the greatest benefits to the greatest number of people," cc- clared Mr. McKenna, "the price not only of automobiles but of other commodities must be made uni- form."
