Pork Packine tn Canapa.-—As compared with some previeus years the business in pork packing in Canada, during the winter f 1878-9, has declined very considerably, the total number of hogs packed being atated at 115.775 avainst 151,781 in the season of 1877-8, a falling off equal to about twenty-four per cent.

Tue Ovpre_tows Natal Day entertainment, which takes place in the Market Hall, to- morrow evening, promises to be a first-class affair. Cuataam Deearine Society on Friday night last debated the new tariff. Mr. Joun Lawson opened the debate, and was re- plied to by Mr. John Newson. The debate was conducted in a very lively manner, a number of the members taking part. Mr. Geo. Full, on invitation of the Chairman, de- livered a very good speech. The hour to ad- journ having arrived, Mr. John Newson moved that the debate be adjourned. The debate will be resumed to-night, when Mr. Newson will open. Society meets in Full’s Hull, Queen Street, every Friday evening, at 5 o'clock. Members of the press, members of the Legislature, and others, are cordially in- vited to attend.

High Freights on the P. EH. Island Railway.

Str,—When the Railway was constructed in this Province the farmers expected it would be a great boon to them, inasmuch as they felt confident they would be enabled to send their saleabies from the most distant point of the line to the best market—Caarlottetown— fora very small cost. But now it appears they have been sadly disappointed. Freights are so heavy that it is impossible for a farmer to send a small quantity of produce to market with profit, and the consequence is thata great portion of the farmers along the line are compelled to hitch up their old steeds aud convey their produce and requisites to and from the market in the same manner as they did before the Railvay was constractad. Merchants and traders in Georgetown and Souris are also compelled to run a line of smali packets to and from Charlottetown. Again those heavy freights tend greatly to cripple business. Whena few days agothe writer seata small quantity of salt from Charlotte- town to Harmony Station he was surprised to fiad that the freight was 25 cents per ba, whereas he could send the same via sailing

ket to Souris for twelve cents per bag. The charges on every other article of freight are accordingly as heavy as those on salt. The writer does not mean by the foregoing re- marks that trains should be runfor nothing; but that a fair and just freight should be ar- ranged—of which farmers woul! not justly complain,
