The steamer “State of Maine” left St. Jobn on Thursday, July 19th, at 8.14 a. m. and arrived at Eostport et 11.20—time 3 hours and 6 minutes. She left Eastport at 9.20 and arrived in Boston a: 5.10 a. m., on Wednesday,— Running time from St. John to Bostun 19 hours and 56 minutes. Thick fog prevailed on Thursday and the steamer had to be slowed down when nearing East- port, and after leaving Rastport, which made the time slower. About sunset the fog cleared cif and an opportunity offered to take the steamer's time from light to light. The exact time was taken from Mount Desert Rock light to Metinacus

A Year's Shipbuilding.

The register book for 1883-84 of the com- mittee of management of ‘*Lloyd's Register of Shipping’ states that 878 vessels were built and registered in the United Kingdom during the year 1882; with anaggregate ton- nage of 928,369. Of theee 541 were steam vessels— 64 being of steel, 446 of iron and 3U of wood. The remaining 337 were sail- ing vessels, of which 8 were of ateel, 83 of iron, and 246 wood. Nine hundred and and ninety-six vessels, with a tonnage of 373,705,were returned as lost, broken up, etc., during the year, and of thess 182 were steam vessels, 158 being iron and 24 wood; and 814 sailing vessels, 45 being of iron and 769 wocd. There were thus 118 more vesse!s lost than built during the year, but the tonnage of those built exceeded that of those lost by 554,674. The number of new vessels classed at Lloyd’s Register of British and foreign shipping during the year was 682, with a tonnage of 989,002. Of these 524 were steam and 158 sailing vessels. There are altogether in the register book 14,742 ships, with a total tonnage of 11,720,590. Of these there are classed 3,264 iron and steel steamers, 1,517 do sailing ships, and 3,068 wood vessels; disclassed, 560 iron and steel steamers, 52 iron sailing ships and 2,782 wood vessels; never classed, 1,870 iron and steel steamers, 121 do ships and 1,508 wood vessels.

Striking Oil.

The July Century contains an article by E. V. Smalley in regard to the importance of the oil fields of the world, as follows :

“Nearly all the petroleam that goes into the world’s commerce is produced in a dis- trict of country about one hundred and fifty miles long, with a varying breadth of from one to twenty miles, lying mainly in the State of Pennsylvania, but laying over a little on its northern edge into the State of New York. This region yielded,in 1881, 26,905,813 barrels, and in 1882, 31,398,750 barrels. A little petroleum is obtained in West Virginia, a little at various isolated points in Ohio, and a litide in the Canadian} province of Ontario. There is also a smal- field in Germany, a larger one, scantly del veloped, in Southern Russia, and one still larger, perbaps in India. The total pro- duction of all the fields, outside of the region here described, is but a small fraction in the general account, however, and has scarcely an appreciable influence upon the market. Furthermore, the oil of these minor fielda, whether in America or the Old Werld, is of an inferior quality, and so long as the great Pennsylvania reservoir holds out, can only supply a local demand in the vicinity of the well.”
