EXUBERANT

This attitude of joy abounds in the relationship of friends. St. Augustine tells us that where friends exchange the things which bring them joy. a greater joy is found: “For when many joy together. each also has more exuberant joy for that they are kindled and inflamed one by the other."

Where can we find a more

stelling scene of the joy of friendship than that which St. Augustine thanks God for the long and anxiously awaited con- version of his dear friend Neb- ridius'f Long before st. Augustine’s time Cicero asked: “What is sweeter than to have one with whom you dare to speak all things as with yourself?" It is in full accord with man's social nature to draw to him- self some kindred soul before whom he can open the burdens of his heart and with whom he can share his greatest blesv lugs.

spected and sought after as one

of the most beautiful and de-

lightful of human institutions

The man who has the gener-

osity and magnanimlty of soul

to give himself to the benevol-

ent union of true friendship not only opens his soul to the lignt of love’s most perfect manifes-

tation on earth but. likewise. holds fast to me of the most de- pendable instruments of self- knowledge and spiritual advan- cement.

That such friendship is. unfor- tunately. rare we cannot deny. That God does not offer fre- quent opportunities for this kind of friendship is probably true but certainly much of its lack is due to the want of men with hearts big enough and selfless enough to meet its demands.

all things truly good it lives for eternity. St. Augustine assures us of this.

CONFIDENCE

When St. Augustine learned to hear the voice of God through the Scriptures he learned that sincere confidence and mutua. assistance were the chief bene- fits of friendship. He never hesi- tated to seek the counsel of oth- ers in his quest for truth.

The profound respect St. Au- gustine held for the element of mutual assistance in friendship. even before his conversion. is seen in his co - operation in a plan to form a community of friends so that each might as- sist the other in the common en- deavor to find peace amidst the turmoils of the world.

The plan failed but Augustine and his friend Alypius never ceased bearing great influence on each other. And this was a good influence because 0 oth were aspiring to a good end and both were intimately sincere in the exchange of confidences.
