Girig Gerrymandering. (Montreal Gazette.)

The Ontario election law, in so far as it applies to Toronto, is unique in its provi- sions. That city is admitted to be strongly Conservative, and under ordinary condi- tions would return to the Legislature, as it does to the House of Commons, three supporters of that party’s principles. But, in his manipulation of the — consii- tuencies in his own interests, Mr Mowatt struck on a happy idea for him of so fixing the law that, at any rate, one of his friends would find a seat. Giy- ing the city three members, he would not divide it into ridings, as is the case in Mon- treal, nor, asis the rule in Hamilton and Ottawa, give each elector as many votes as the constituency has representatives. But he, through his majority in the Legislature, declared that each elector would have but two votes, which may be cast for the same or different candidates. Thus the minority will secure a representative, where, under the British system, the system that prevails throughout the Dominion and throughout the province of Ontario, outside of Toronto, 1t would have none. The scheme would be comparatively free from objection were it made to apply throughout the country, where in some of the counties the Conser- vatives might occupy a position similar to that of the Liberals in the city ; but these have been arranged on a different plan, and the Conservatives *‘ hived”’ or gerryman- dered till a great part of their voting strength is lost. An agitation for a uni- form and equitable law of representation is much needed in the sister province.

A Remarkable Discovery.

A special to the Chicago Times from Springtield, DL, suys: A remarkable dis- covery, and one thet will excite consider- able attention in the medical world, has been made in this city by Dr. G. N. Deider, a local physician and surgeon. Thé case in question is called actinomycosis hominis, or lump jaw in the human being. The disease infects cattle and other animals, and was first discovered in a human being in Berlin, Germany, in 1883, and the present case is thought to be the first in this country. The subject of the present case is a young lady employed ina manufacturing estab- lishment, who, about a year ago, was operated upon for tumor of the left jaw, which was extirpated. It grew again, and she went to Jacksonville to consult a phy- sician. By accident the physician was ab- sent, and the case came under the notice of Dr. Dieder, of this city. He secured some of the fungus, and when placed under the microscope it developed the disease, with which the doctor ig familiar, having seen it in the old country a year ago while pursuinga serigs..ofgtudies of medi- cal science. It is a fungoid growth, and one of the proofs of the germ theory. The fungus is a mass of yellowish pus contain- ing small plagues resembling seed, mingled with long filaments. The disease invades the lungs, intestines and general system, and, if not interrupted in its course, in- variably results in death ; but if taken in its primary stage, as in the present case, it can be cured. Dr. Rauch, of the state board of health, examined the fungus and confirms the diagnosis made by Dr. Deider,

The Patriots League.

At a recent meeting in Chicago to set on foot a movement to counteract the influence of Socialists and their teachings, the name ‘* Patriots’ League ” was adopted. General John L. Thompson was elected president, Colonel H. W. Jackson, treasurer; and a committee on publication were appointed and the following platform and declaration of principles and purposes were adopted. The primary objects of this League shall be:

1. To support and defend the government, con- stitution. laws and institutions of the United States, national, state and municipal, as adminis- tered through the three necessary and well defined legislative, executive and judicial depart- ments, and to furnish a channei through which the order-loving and jlaw-honoring sentiment of the country can et all times express itself and make it convictions and strength known.

2. To oppose anarchy, socialism, communism, Mormonism and despotism of all kinds, and ail kindred social and political heresies that tend to destroy the peace of society, the authority of gov- ernwent, the sanctions of laws, the rights of pro- perty, the liberty of the citizens and the sacred- ness of the family; and to serve due notice on anarchists, socialists and all similar ‘‘ists” and ‘‘isms” that human liberty, as represented and protected by American free institutions, has cost too mach and is too valuable and too sacred to allow it to be overthrown, undermined, endan- gered or desecrated by foreign agitators and re- volutionists or demaygogues of any creed or de- scription.

3. To disseminate sound views and practical, accurate information on political, social and economic subjects by means of carefully prepared books and ae to be published and sold at the bare cost of production and distribution, and thus place the means of political education within the reach of all; and,in general, to pro- mote and encourage the study and rational) dis- cussion of social, political and economic ques- tions by the whole body of American citizens,

Srr,--In looking over the Protestant Union of to-day, I observe a few remarks on the P. E. Island Hospital. One of them I think it my dity to correct. After my wife resigned the Matronship of the Hospi- tai, I carried the keys and was manager of the Hospital, until I, myself, resigned, which was some three months after my wife gave up charge on account of ill health. If anyone should doubt my remarks, they have but to refer to the day-book at the Hospital and they will then see that I handed over the keys along with the house- 10ld effects in good condition on the eleventh day of October. The keys were then handed to Miss McDonald who took charge.

Dillen the Agitator.

Joun Ditton, who is the most prominent

‘figure in the anti-rent agitation now going on

in Ireland, looks—-te judge by the pictures of him which appear in the newspapers—very like a Presbyterian clergyman. He is de- scribed as a studious gentleman, a man of property, delicate in physique, and the last person in the world one would expect to en- gage in political agitation. He isthe son of an Irish rebel leader of 1848, John Blake Dil- lon, at a late period of his life member of par- liament for the county Tipperary, and pre- viously a New York lawyer. Mr. Dillon may be said to have inherited that hatred of Brit- ish rule which makes him an agitator, in spite of the inducements to learned leisure with which fortune has favored him, He is a doc- tor of medicine by profession, but de- clines practice, having no need of its financial rewards, and finding more congenial occupation as an Irish member of parliament, and as a speaker and writer representing the cause of his country. ‘The first article in the current number of the Nineteenth Century is from the pen of Join Dillon, who takes a gloomy view of the prospects of the coming severe weather in Ireland, aud censures the neglect of parliament in not taking legislative precaution for the security of the people in their homes. John Dillon has a slight frame, His face is pale and spiritual, with the beauti- ful deep brown eyes setina frame of black hair and beard, As an orator he excels in the command of the affections of his hearers, Dar- ing two previous imprisonments, Mr. Dillon sutfered severely in health, and his friends are apprehensive as to what may be the conse- quences of another period of incarceration upon his delicate and weakened constitution. —ae +

Father and Sen Both Hilled.

P. Floyd, of Antigonish, has received a let- ter from his brother in Idaho Springs, Colo- rado,announcing the death in the mines there, November 23rd, of a father and son nawed Stevens, belonging to Tangier, Halifax. They had just gone to work at six p. m., and were oading a hole with giant powder when it ex- ploded. The boy never knew what happened tohim. His brains were blown out and _ his body torn to pieces. The father was blown about thirty yards, had legs and arms broken and face smashed. He lived six hours and leaves a widow, two boys and two girls, the eldest six years. A uative of Antigonish was killed in the mines at the same place a few weeks ago.

A Button in a Boy's Head. An interesting and remarkable medical case was treated in Spartanburg, 8. C., a few days ago by Dr. G. W. Heinitish, specialist on head diseases. The patient, a white boy 10 years old, had for six years been treated by able physicians for what was supposed to be a serious case of catarrh, but no relief could be obtained. His parert: became very much alarmed ahout the boy’s condition. Dr. Heinitish took charge of the case, and after several days’ treatment concinded that the nostril was obstructed by some foreign sub- stance. He finally succeeded in locating the obstacle, and performed a surgical operation to remove it. He was successful, and found up in the boy’s head a large-sized brass shoe button, which had caused six years of trouble. The patient is rocevering rapidly. _— a o> bp se ae .
