This is good ol’ rock ‘n roll with a twist. There are drums, electric guitars and synthesizers - all standard instruments in a modern rock

band. What makes this recording unique _is the underlying eclectic sounds

from the urban jungle, and soaring above it all is TRAE’s piercing and angst-filled voice. His vocal style is very tortured and passionate. It seems obvious that the person to whom he sings this song is weighing heavily on his mind. You can hear the voices of his paranoia speaking to him throughout the song. Though it is hard to tell from a single track, TRAE sounds likea “tres cool” guy. Check him out.

Trip 66 is a rock band. You know the type I’m talking about. The ones that are often labelled as “grunge” or more recently “alternative”, but most of us realize that it is not the sound that has really changed, but rather the wardrobe of the performers.

Instrumentally, Trip 66 sounds a lot like the “little boy garage bands” that have been so popular the past few years, but they aren’t. Trip 66 is fronted by a singer with a great talent - and she’s a girl!

Maria Nicgorski is vocally akin to the wave of angry sounding women who have been climbing up the charts of late. Her strength is her extreme versatility. She sometimes sounds as intense as Janis Joplin, while at other times she is reminiscent of the late Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon in the way that she sounds like she is an absent minded observer of the band rather than its lead singer. Trip 66 kicks. They only get better the more you listen.

Pet Shop Boys Bilingual Parlophone (EMI)

Lifeis all about accepting yourself, and holding onto your dreams. That is what the Pet Shop Boys are saying in their new release, Bilingual.

This tracks on this aptly titled album contain a lot of Spanish/Latin influences bothlyrically and instrumentally. It is very upbeat, continuing the Pet Shop Boy’s shift in attitude away from their darker, sadder roots to their present lively and much more optimistic form.

Neil Tennant relates how he came to accept his sexuality in a song entitled “Metamorphosis”. (“What I wanted to be was a family man, but nature had some alternative plans.”) He also celebrates the trials and joys of being human in “Se a vida e (That’s the way life is)” and “The survivors”.

Although many of the tracks are fun to dance to, it would be a shame to call Bilingual a dance album. I would rather call it a wonderful musical accomplishment that marries the old and the new, the passionate Latin rhythms that have always made people want to move, and the energy of modern techno that

keeps us groovin’ today. Looking for a career in health care?
