The first article entitled

."State of the Student Union ’ Address" by Kevin Walker, Student Union President, in the Jan. 3lst issue of the Sun page 3. In this article Mr. Walker donates one half of his article to the campus radio statim CID/N. He does not make his personal views known, but does give for ' the most part, a morbid future for the station.

The second article is a rebuttal by former Student union president, Kevin Gauthier. In this article Mr. Gauthier out that President, Walker's asSertidn that the Union is in good shape is wrong; the Union is sick and dying slowly. I agree in princi— ple with Mr. Gauthier's statement, but later in the article he makes a reference to the Radio Station "Radio CINN- has _ to be closed until we can afford to operate it properly".

'Jhis is the only reference Mr. Gauthier makes to the station. He, in one state- ment, is condemning a whole sectim‘ of service pro-, vided by the Student Union. Is Mr. Gauthier's opinion . a well educated and thought' out opinim? 'Ihis writer thinks not. To the best of my knowledge, Mr. Gauthier is, or was, ad- vertisingmanager for the Sun and CINN. Presently ' We're seem to be some contradictions to the-role that Mr. Gauthier is playingv in the running of both the

to Patrick Kelly, statim manager of CINN, Gauthier seems to have gotten very little advertisement for the station. '

I first met Station Mahager, Patrick Kelly during a public debate with which I was a co— organizer. Patrick attended with his tape recorder and microphone. ‘Ihe insignia of his sta- tion was proudly, on the microphone where the re— spective federal election candidates read their pleas for support. The presence of CINN newsteam was evi— dent to say the least. After the debate, I introduced myself to Patrick. 'I asked if a' copy of the tape wouldbe available to copy from. He jumped at the chance to be ofservi-oe. To say the least, I was quite impre— ssed with the graduate of

.lVbrell High School.

Finding Patrick very approachable, I began my personal investigation into the station. Talking with Patrick and his co— ' worker, I was more and more impressed with the action that the station as a whole had taken to try to get it working at full-- potential again. Everyone I talked to was very open and sincere. I obtained (opinions from various people not affili- ated, but closely connected to the station, i.e. the Sun staff.

The radio staff explained how the station worked and the problems they were encountering. Patrick ex— plained how thetransmitter needed repair, the process of getting it fixed, the break in the co—arial cable down to Blanchard, and the

In reply to whether the Student Union was giving the station support, he 'repliedvin scmewhat in— different manner- It was plain to see that-pro- blems in catmuniCation did exist.

Patrick has taken the loadupon himself to get the station working again.

He has recruited the services of an electrical engineer to, help unravel the electrical system so

as it can be easily applied. He has investigated the trouble down in Blanchard Hall and has been seen digging with pick and shovel to find the break in the cable. He

has recruited a capable , Program Director in Robert Page and also a healthy nucleus of disc- jockeys.

His efforts to get the

‘his station should came to life next year, barring

_ camplete disaster. The

sincere efforts of all of these people who work at the station must be v, examined when the station is being considered for shutdown.

Yes, there are many ero- blems, and a financial committment from the S.U. will be required, but once the station gets going again, Patrick feels that enough advertisement can be obtained to help defer the initial costs. He has made up a pro— posal which is both practical and realistic.

If there ever was a time for the S.U. to make a cannittnent, now is that thme, now when we have the capable personnel to look after the station. Now when a strong campus radio station could help clear up the so—called "apathy syndrome".

This writer himself was sceptical about the future of the station until the ignorance from which I was basing my opinions was alleviated. If you are in any doubt, you, yourself, climb "the stairway of knowledge" in the Main
