The cross-examination of the expert, Mr. Sawyer, was continued ali this morning in the McDonald case by C. W. Weldon. prisoner, testified that going to Fredericton for the purpose of a change, and to canvass for orders. At the evening session of court there was a very large attendance, and it is evident, as the case is drawing to a close, that the interest in the proceedings is greatly increased.

Although some of the legal gentlemen believe the case will be given to the jury to-morrow evening, the prospect at present is decidedly against this opinion. The Boston defeuce handwriting expert, Fair- banks, was on the stand all the evening, and his cross-examination was not com- pleted when the court adjourned at nearly Ll o’clock*until morning. On taking the stand he proceeded by means of a black- board to dissect the various writings. He said it was impossible to draw comparisons between script and stub-writing. No stan- dard stub had been produced, and con- sequently the comparison failed. He ad- mitted that the letter S in the writing of the prisoner was similar to the S on the boxes addressed to the clergymen, and also admitted that the same figures on the boxes were similar to other figures admitted to be the prisoners.

The Government will call for tenders in a few days for a steam service in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, between Magdalen Islands and some point on the mainland not yet settled upon. A number of contractors are in town in connection with the con- tract.

Reports received by the Comptroller of the Northwest Mounted Police as to the condition of ;affairs in the force throughout the Northwest, are of the most satisfactory nature. No destitution is reported among the half-breeds such as prevailed a few years ago,

The fact that the Dominion Government are sending to England for an officer to till the position of aid-de-camp to General Middleton, instead of appointing a Military College graduate to the place, is unfavor- ably commented upon here.

Messrs. Andrew Allan, of the Allan Line, and H. Bulmer, of Montreal, had another interview with the Minister of Marine and Fisheries yesterday regarding the proposed survey and tidal observations of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Last evening J. X. Perrault, who repre- sented the Chamber of Commerce at the Paris Exposition, presented to representa- tives of the Massey Manufacturing Co. a gold medal, awarded to that Company for its exhibits of agricultural implements.

The track in the Canadian Pacific Rail- way extensiou from London to Windsor is now completed and will shortly be in run- | ning order. The line is one hundred and twelve miles in length.

Captain Kenny’s Tynte, an Englishman who has been a short time in Canada, has been appointed to an Indian agency in the Northwest, at a salary of about $2000 a year,

_ The Admiralty, as a measure of precau tion in view of the possible straining of the | relations between England and Portugal, regarding their possessions in Africa, has made arrangements to transfer the depots and naval stores for the Mediterranean and channel squadrons from Lisbon; and orders were recently issued for the warship Agammenon, now at Zanzibar, to rejoin the Mediterranean squadron. These orders have since been countermanded, and she will remain at Zanzibar.

Landlords’ Convention.

The Duke of Abercorn presided at the Landlords’ Convention in this city to-day. | He denied that the combination of land- | lords was intended to hamper the tenants, | and said that not a sixpence of the conven- tion’s funds had gone for such a_ purpose. The convention adopted resolutions de- claring the retention of the landed class a necessity for civil liberty, and protesting against any measure making the sale of land compulsory. They also agreed to pro- vide and advance money to enable the landlords to buy out the interests of ten- ants.

Electric Light Wires. New York, Dec. 19. The work of cutting down dangerous electric light wires in various parts uf the city still continues and there is no prospect of the city emerging from the gloom that prevails at night.
