SU President’s Message

As the school year comes to a close, it feels as if it was only a couple of months ago that I began my term as president. As things wind up, it is evident that 2002/2003 was a very exciting year here at UPEI.

I would like to thank

everyone who has been involved in our activities throughout the year. There is def- initely

a new sense of spirit and Panther Pride vis- ‘ible on campus. The

year has been great in both our on campus and off campus

activities. This year we had the opportuni- ty to meet with : government on a number of ocassions, bringing to the table a

number of issues from Student Loans to providing a fully funded

tuition freeze for the upcoming year. These are major issues, ones

that the Student Union will continue in their mandate in the year to come.

The new W.A. Murphy Student Centre has been well utilized by ;

students. It has met our expectations, and has truly become the

hub of campus, providing a much needed social spot for students

to call their own. It has also provided us with a new means of communication with students, which has had an impact on many

different areas in our campus community.

As the year winds down, and my time with the Student Union is quickly

running out, I would like to thank each and every one of you for the

support you've given me during my term as President. It has truly

been an honour to serve you. The experi- ence I have had over the

past few years at the Student Union will never be forgotten. To the graduating class, I with you success in your future ende- vours. To returning students, best of luck on your exams, enjoy the summer, and be ready to start another exciting year in September! oe

VP Finance Message

I would to begin by wishing all students the very best as they complete their academic studies in the coming weeks. Before moving on to the task at hand, I wish to pause for a moment of reflection and take time to thank my col- leagues. It has been pleasure working with this executive, and with this council over the past year, and I look to forward to completing my term in office.

Over the past year, within the capacity of my role, I believe I have helped the Student Union move forward in number of areas. As VP Finance, I had the pleasure of sitting on the Hiring Board, the Budget Committee, The Wave Management Committee, and The Cadre Board of Directors. During the course of the year, there were many issues and con- cerns raised at these various levels that were brought to our attention by the stu- dents — from all walks of life. As we promised at the start of the year, we did our best to ensure that these issues had our full attention, and that appropriate reme- dies were put in place.

But the central tenet of my role within the organization is to provide a proper accounting of the financial activi-

~ ties of the student union, a task that con-

sumes significant resources but provides the necessary accountable that our mem- bers deserve. My job is also about plan- ning for the future. Right now our budget committee is meeting regularly in the aim of preparing a budget for next year that accurately reflects the wishes of the stu- dents. It is your money, and it is important that we develop a sound framework that incorporates the divergent needs and prior- ities of the ever-enlarging student popula- tion. Gone are the days of Student Union running fiscal deficits. Students recognize that this is not a prudent course of action to promote long-term prosperity, and I can assure you that our budget committee rec- ognizes this as well. We will never allow the agenda of today trump the financial

_ security and prosperity of tomorrow. Vice Presidents' of Finance come :

and go. I leave knowing that the Union is in strong financial condition. I would like to thank my fellow executive and council members for making this past year both enjoyable and productive. I would also like to wish the incoming executive and

council members all the best in the upcom- ing year.

VP Activities Message

To those who attended our Swollen Members Concert, you are likely aware that great things really are happening on campus. The concert for example, which also featured a wizard-like performance by Scratch Bastard, proved that Atlantic Canadian talent is comparable.to any.

I'm pleased to have been part of UPEI's diverse campus. Working to provide a suitable environment for the student body has been both a challenge, and a blessing in disguise. I have learned just how much a person's eyes may light up, if one can actually reach out and make that all-impor- tant, real connection.

Throughout the year, countless students have contacted me. I hope I've been of assistance in helping create a more positive university life experience to some. If this

has happened, my term as VP Activities

has been more than successful.

Enjoy the remainder of your semester, and best of luck & success in exams, and in all your endeavors... whatever you may choose.
