U.P.E.I. Brings Trophy Home

Last Thursday, January 30, UPEI hosted the seventh annual UPEI-Holland College debate. This year the winner of the Prince of Wales Class of ’54 trophy was the home team.

For the last three years, Holland College has won, but this year UPEI’s team of Michael Woodman, and Julie Theriault defeated Holland Colleges Greg MacKinnon and Kevin O’ Brian.

All four speakers debated well and had interesting points to raise about the topic: ‘‘Be it resolved that Canada should scrap its policy on bilingualism.’’ The debaters used a medley of personal anecdotes, statisti- cal facts, and heckling to make the debate lively and

interesting.

The moderator for the debate was former Lieutenant Governor of P.E.I., Mr. Gordon Bennett. He also moderated last years debate at Holland College.

Anne Thurlow, one of the judges, made acomment that I will always remember. She said, in reference to

she has never seen anyone improve so much over the course of a year as he did.
