After church last night, Mrs. George Harvie, aged 35, the accomplished wife of the head master of the Halifax Art School, committed suicide by drowning. Her body was found this morning in the pond near the entrance to Point Pleasant Park. She attempted suicide two years ago, and since then has been subject to fits of melancholy.

Steamer Ashore.

Hawirax, May 3.

A despatch from Ingonish, C. B., says the steamer Bessie Morris, from Montreal for Sydney, ran ashore at Burt Head, one mile south of White Point, Aspy . Bay, at one o'clock this morning. She had no cargo. The crew were saved, and the ship is supposed to be a total wreck, but no further particulars are to hand.

The Minister of Justice to-day received an application from Consul-General Phelan for the release of the Martha Winship on bail, pending the result of legal proceed- ings. The agent of the department was immediately instructed to accept reasonable bail if offered.

The highest offer received by the Minis- ter of Marine for the steamer Newfield is less than $6,000. The Grit Government paid a supporter $65,000 for her fourteen years ago, and she has been a bill of ex- pense ever since,

New Line Opened.

Montreal, June 3. The new C. P. R. line to St. Paul and Minneapolis, via the ‘* Soo,” shortening the distance between Montreal and the last named city some 150 miles, was opened to- day, the train leaving at 10 o’clock this forenoon.

Orrawa, June 3. A private letter carrier in Hamilton has decided to contest the right of the Govern- ment to a monopoly of the carrying trade.
