The race was sailed ina beavy wind, necessitating double reefs, and the Domin- ion showed herself to be much the better boat, winning by about a mile and a half in ® minutes and 26 seconds.

The race was star‘ed at 12.40, the Chal- lenger was first across and the Dominion

the windward position almost at once.

It seemed a question of how much her lead would Le that was all.

As on every previous occasion, she dis- tanced the American in beating up to the windward, thus it was that when the long tack to starboard had been run in order to reach the mark boat, the Challenger was hopelessly behind, unless she could make up a difference of nearly three minutes.

This she had never been able to do on any of the previous runs before the w nd and unless something unlooked for oc~ curred it seemed plainly a very easy win for the Dominion.

The Challenger made up considerably more than a minute onthe home run in the ciosing round, it did not make her dangerous however.

When the yachts had rounded the stake boat to commence the second round, the Dominion’s lead was irrecoverable.

There was no feature in the second round, except that the Dominion closed the first half of the race with a ‘ead of over tive minutes.

From this time forward it was a question

St. Joun, N. B., Aug. 18.—A big rain, hail and wind storm swept the valley of the St. Croix yesterday afternom. Ij struck the town of Calais and St. Stephen pretty hara, tearing down shade trees and doing other damage.

Bostoy, Aug 18.—There was a severe thunderstorm with downfall of destructive hai’ the hailstones being over an inch in diameter.

Sr. Srernuy, Aug.18.—A church was struck by lightning here yesterday and partially destroyed by fire.

Throughout Maine and Massachusetts the storm did much damage.

In the mountain dis- tricts of Austria eztreme cold prevails, the thermometer registering within a few hours @ fall from 100 degrees to 40 degrees. Heavy falls of snow have occured at Innsbruck, Gratz and elsewhere.

A MOSTENJOYABLE GATEERING OF THE CLANS.

Immense Number of People went

Yesterday to St. Peter's Bay.

Yesterday being the occasion of the annual celebration of the Caledonian Club, all loyal Scotsmen and Scotswomen, who could, turned out to witness the sports which were held on the grounds of John P. Sullivan, Esq., St. Peter’s Bay.

A large train went up from Charlotte- town and by the time it arrived at its dis- tance it comprised nine cars full of people,

Numbers came from other parte of the Island, and the crowd on the ground in the afternoon was immense.

The day was much enjoyed, al] the na~ tional sports aod amusementa were partici- pated in—the athletic events bringing some young men to the front, whose names will be found in the prize list published below,

The heavy hammer in ibe bands of Mr. D. BE. Clarke was sent further than the highest Isiand record. The gold medal for the best all round athlete was won by Mr. D. M. McDonald, of Charlottetown. The names of the other succeesful men will be found below.
