PANTHERS WILL BE THERE!
Before starting this article I would like to mention that this article, as well as any subsequent ones, are merely my personal opinion of the sports world and by no means reflect the attitudes of the SUN staff or the executive of the U.P.E.I. Student Union.
Historically, the football program at the University of Prince Edward Island has been as predictable and as sturdy as the federal government's anti- inflation programs. How— ever this writer feels that this. year will be even more unpredictable than in the past. As
.usual there is a great
deal of optimism surrounding the team as it gets ready for
Saturday' 5 opening against the Saint Mary's Huskies. Isn't that the way it always
,is? I mean, it would be
terrible looking at the home opener any other way. The coaches seem confident of their diarges. ’Ihey say that they have the talent to really have a top notch season. Head coach Ed Hilton has said that this year the Panthers will reverse their 1—6 record and will be part of the A.U.A.A. playoffs.
Although I admit that I am not a trained football critic, I was not overly impressed with last Sunday's so—called scrimmage. The defense looked strong but that is always true here. The defensive backfield seems to have improved and the line is as steady as ever.
But the Panthers still have the sane prdolem.
Where is the offense? Can Rick Kiraly put together any sort of sustained . attack that will make the Panthers the contender that the coaching staff say they will be? I think the answer is most definitely
by John Neville YES. But what I also think is that it will not happen overnight. I do not expect
_ to see a potent offensive
machine a la Oakland Raiders on Saturday afternoon at MacAdam
field. What I do suspect
I will see is 40 guys
and a coaching staff work— ing their butt off to beat those damn Huskies. What
I also suspect I will see is one awful lot of people giving their full support to a bunch of their
friends who have worked like hell since the last week of August to get ready for this game. Regardless of the outcane, this year's football team will be good.
They will be good because they certainly appear to
be together. If they can stay that way they will be a definite contender. 'Ihe Huskies will be tough but our guys will be tougher.
'Ihe outcome will depend on the offense. If they do a job the Panthers will be on their way. Should they win, look out Acadia!
Should they lose, do not 7 pack up for the season. There looks to be too much character on this club to roll over and play dead. Regardless, remember that they are the Panthers and they deserve your full support. My prediction. . . Panthers 19, Huskies 15.
In baseball, there . appears to be a great shortage of verbal Boston Red Sox fans these days after they were humiliated by the world champion Yankees. Don't fret - they will be back.. a couple of years. 'Ihe division winners as I see it are Yankees, California Angels, Phillies and Dodgers with a replay of last year's World Series.
In football, it will be the Ottawa Roughriders all the way in the East with a dog fight in the West. Ottawa will lose to the Western winner in the Grey 01p. N.F.L. . . . . . ..Dallas the rest well back. ,
