Laughter is a good thing. it is best. however, when it arises spontaneously and as an over- flow oi spiritual well-being. Too often, it is merely something add- ed from without‘ a mere emo- tional stimulation artiiicially pro- duced.

Laughter is not an end in it- self. And people who do things for laughs" are. for the mosl part. cynical. Much of the laugh- ter in the modern world has this hollow quality about it. One writ- er has compared it to the false- ly cheerful music played by the orchestra on a sinking ship.

Something of the true nature of joy, however, is indicated for us in the Church's sacred litur- gy. Tomorrow. the third Sunday oi Advent. is called Gaudete Sun- day. Gaudete is the first word oi both the lntroit and Epistle and is taken from St. Paul's Epis- tle to the Philippians (4.4) “Be-
